Stops Burst-speed effects if used preemptively. This is very important. We finally have some Frostbite protection.
Spellshield kind of functions as a Deny in decks that only want to protect their units, so I could see this being good in something like a Karma control deck, an Ezreal deck, and maybe even a Yasuo deck (if Targon has Stun cards). I honestly prefer this design over deny, since it can't counter cool big spells. The Spellshield effect also lasts over multiple turns (not with this card, but with the Spellshield effect in general), so we could see a unit with Spellshield that would be like a one-time Fizz (which is far less annoying to play against).

By the way -- Yip confirmed via Twitter that SpellShield stops only the effect on the unit it protects. It does not cancel the entire spell the way Fizz does.
We already knew from spoilers but this confirms Taric is coming soon.
