How does the Recent Threads feature work?

Submitted 2 years, 10 months ago by

In the sidebar (on the right side) of the Hearthstone portal overview the Recent Threads are shown with the amount of time elapsed since the last update. What I do not understand is for instance for New Warlock Minion - Stealer of Souls it says that some update occurred very recently, but when you click on the arrow to navigate to the latest comment it is old and there does not seem to be any new comment added.

Is it another caching issue, perhaps someone fooling around or am I missing something? I am curious about this 🤔

"If it looks like a new comment, swims like a new comment, and quacks like a new comment, then it probably is a new comment... but not always though."

As far as I know, this happens when spam/advertizing/similar stuff gets deleted.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

Can you elaborate on this please? I do not understand the correlation.

When a spam/advertizing/whatever post is made in a thread, the site registers this just like any normal post. Then the housekeeping algorythm kicks in and removes the post. What causes some irritation is that the site still displays the time of the deleted post as the last post in this thread. Maybe it helps if I give an example:

    09.06.2021, 11:15 normal post

    10.06.2021, 17:00 offensive post

Even after the offensive post got deleted, the site will display that the last post in this thread was made on 10.06.2021, 17:00.

At least that's what I remember from similar issues in the past. Maybe one of the staff members can explain this better, I'm neither a native speaker nor a site dev.

Thanks for the clarification and would indeed explain the inner workings of the feature. It is unfortunate for me that it happens though, because I frequently use the Recent Threads feature to check for the latest content on this site.

We will probably never find the answer, but I wonder what could possess an individual to spam on this community site.

If it is a bot however, I can imagine it is just a reusable piece of software (script) which can randomly attack any website where posts are allowed.
