If you want a build to try with this merc, try my "Bro'ken" composition, currently blasting through PVE & undefeated in the PVP training grounds. Includes guide: https://outof.cards/hearthstone/mercenaries/parties/32-broken/

He is the tank of the nature comp. +6/+16 per nature ability is a lot. The bench-buffing ability of Runic slam is nice and it work very well with another nature merc: Brightwing. So he is very useful in the right party, and IMO he is surprisingly strong for a rare.

On a slightly different topic: is it good to have tanks that are not "protectors"? I think yes. If you are playing against a lot of casters, either in PVE or PVP, you might not want a "red tank", but you might still want a tank in the party. So IMO its completely fine to have different roles in each color, it just adds to the strategy.

Guff is all about those Nature abilities, but he goes about it in a weird way. He Attacks, buffs and Taunts like a Protector would, but then he has Living Brambles which is just straight damage. He has to compete with Brightwing in the bench-buffing aspect, but at least his is not random or single-target, and he affects the current battlefield as well. He needs other Nature users to be truly effective, though.

All-in-all, I like him, I just wonder if there's an identity-crisis going on with his Role.

Brightwing and Guff actually have terrific synergy. If your bench wants buffs like that, then you might as well have both in your opening.

Brightwing also has a super fast nature skill for Guff to combo off of and she can heal him. Then your third could even be Alex or something (for the dragon synergy) and she can burst down/threaten out fighters for them.
