Are burnt out streamers good for HS?

Submitted 4 years, 8 months ago by

I first started thinking about this after noticing that Disguised Toast was doing a card reveal (and how he has been rather out of the HS spotlight for the time being, at least until new content releases). Then I thought back to Savjz (who I used to consume his Youtube content regularly before he quit HS. Now, I'm not saying that all streamers are burnt out on the game or that they even dislike the game. Nor, am I saying that specific streamers such as Toast are necessarily burnt out, as opposed to just taking a break (although at times I wonder if he really enjoys the game as much as his persona tries to sell his HS content, but that is complete conjecture).

However, it led me to the question in the title. If a streamer did start burning out and for whatever reason (mostly money probably) did not just quit the game and move on to something else, then would their half-hearted image and involvement in the game really be more of a good thing? I can't help but feel it would just create a little bit more potential for negativity in the community, or at least the false impression that the average player doesn't have fun with the game if some of the streamers in the public eye are burnt out.

Thoughts?

It's a rough thing.  We've had a number of eras where many of the content providers stuck to the game because any other game wouldn't produce nearly as many views.  They are all now very happy with the game nowadays.

There's also the consideration that content providers aren't 'playing a hobby'.  They are doing a job.  There's  a line between hobby and job when you realize that you aren't doing something just for yourself but for someone else.  That's when you realize you can't just change or keep something because you prefer it.

But that's about the content provider.  Whether they stay in hearthstone when they don't enjoy it is based on how much of what they do is a hobby and how much is it a job. And them staying for the sake of work is...well.. just like staying in any job when things turn meh.

As far as hearthstone's health...it depends.

If the person has been playing for a long time and simply wants to move on then that's just life.  So long as new people step in to take their place then the game simply grows to the next generation.  If they dislike the game due to negative aspects though, it's a bad sign for the game, though far from unrecoverable.

Note that whether they DO leave is almost not an issue.  A person who is 'done' but stays while burnt out and a person who leaves instead does about the same damage overall.  Stagnating providers eventually lose their drive, which eventually turns off the public wihle making the game feel just as stale.  People that leave, meanwhile, bring woe and doomsayers.  Stay or go, te public knows you no longer want to play and will react accordingly.

So point is, it doesn't really matter if they stay or go.  Once they are burnt out, their reasons for feeling so are enough to affect the game, whether it's just a sign of the game moving to a new group or a sign of the game getting worse.  From there, actually staying or going only really affects the content provider.

Why trade with minions when you can face for...billions?

Depends on the streamer's attitude.  If they begin roasting the game while playing, it's obviously bad.  If they can keep professional, it's fine.  If HS was a smaller game, then even the negative ones are good because it boosts numbers but HS is big enough to be picky

In any case, money is money.  People are trying to make a living and a job can't always be something you love doing.  You can't really tell burnt out streamers to gtfo because of an arbitrary matter like community health

I guess the honeymoon is long over and HS is proving it‘s sustainability right now.

Content producer dropping out for personal reasons is perfectly normal. As long as this is not happening in large numbers, new faces can take their place.

I say it‘s normal, not irrelevant though! It‘s crazy how important the content surrounding HS is. Fortunatly we got people like Kripp and Kibler that probably won‘t stop for quite some time

When Twitch was not so popular probably a burnout streamer will be a bad call, but today many streamers do that as a job and HS give a very big visibility considering its numbers so they keep playing it even if they're not enjoying the game anymore. The only thing that matter at that point is if they keep a professional attitude instead of just ranting here and there.

I feel like that should be a nobrainer, if you start acting out, who is gonna watch you? Meaning you lose some revenue stream, so it is in your best interest to keep it together and act professional. And if you are being a dick and ppl just take it, then that is not a streamer problem, that is a community problem that they dont speak up, either literally or with their "money" aka viewership, subs etc.

It should be a no brainer yet there'e plenty of popular streamers doing this.  Maybe they want to appeal to disgruntled players as part of an edgy persona or they genuinely feel this way and being professional is hard

Pretty sure he stated publicly he won't reveal the card at all. That's been over a week ago.

Yup. Not to mention, Blizz removed the link to his youtube channel, as well as the art leak.

Ah, i missed that. That stinks for Toast.  I enjoyed his HS antics and don't really care for any TFT content, so for me if he doesn't come back to HS, will be dissapointed.

Honestly, I don't follow reddit, so I don't know what angered Toast. I just googled his name and SOU and the other reddit post I stumbled upon is this:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/ce3a4m/why_is_toast_getting_a_card_reveal/

But like I said, I don't know if this is the reddit post, which Toast referred in his tweet.

It seems people get upset because a card was given to Toast to be revealed, even if he doesn't stream HS anymore. While indeed the whole thing was badly handled by Blizzard, I think that also Toast should have not accepted to reveal a card since he lefted the game.

Ofc all this nuisance around a single card reveal is also absolutly out of place, imho.

Thanks for quick answer, since Toast also mentioned Thijs it should be the reddit post Toast referred.

    I don't understand the question.

Are you suggesting that everyone who is burned out at the end of an expansion cycle is a bad guy/gal about it?
B/c you don't have to be. You can both be tired of the expac cycle but still a good streamer.

Yep, it also looks like Thijs didn't recieve any card to reveal and that have upset people even more considering he's probably one (if not the most) popular streamer of HS nowdays on top of being a multi-world champion.

Another bad marketing decision by Blizzard, I suppose.

I really don't understand people and feeling behind being a fan but really, Who really cares which streamer reveals a card and even how they are playing the game.

I just wanted to learn what happened on reddit and why Toast sent back the the card. This marketing stuff with streamers really works ? I mean I don't really understand how someone can be a fan of another person and make decisions -especially for buying the game/packs etc.- according to those moves.

Those fan emotions are really weird for me.

Not that it is going to bother him or anyone.  I was following Toast and others for HS.  If they aren't playing I just unfollow them.  I liked toast but I want to learn from him.  The other games he is playing does not really help me any.
