Favorite expansion/expansions?

Submitted 2 years, 2 months ago by

So I was wondering what your guy's favorite expansions were STORY wise not meta wise. My heart eternally belongs to the Rise of shadows line because I love the villans and League of explorers. Also the songs were fire. So now I ask what was your favorite/favorites? bonus points if you talk about your favorite song and why it's witchwood or SOU.

For story I'd also pick Rise of Shadows. The Year of the Dragon was the pinnacle of Hearthstone embracing its own identity, both mechanically and thematically, and RoS was the best of the 3 for me.

It also helps that over the pandemic I have been playing as Togwaggle in a D&D campaign, and we just rounded things off by rescuing - then stealing! - a flying city. We weren't even aiming to mimic the Dalaran Heist, it just ended up that way, and it's beautiful :D

For songs, I'm probably going to lose a few points for this, but I've never liked SoU's song. I appreciate why people would like it, but it's not my kind of thing. I like Witchwood's, though it took a while to grow on me. For my favourite, I'll go for WotOG, with TGT and RR being my honourable mentions. If we expand the search to all trailers, then K&C's "The Light Candle" trailer and the Dalaran Heist trailers need a shout out. (Basically anything with Togwaggle in it is an instant winner :P)

My favorite expansion will always be Whispers of The Old Gods, simply because it was the current expansion when I joined.

Also, does anyone else only think the reason Knights of The Frozen Throne was the most successful because of the insane amount of advertisement it had??? There was constantly new media leading up to it (Team 5 got the Lich King to go to an ice cream shop??) and I was constantly bombarded with ads.

The goofy and detailed stories of Hearthstone is why I love this game. It breathes so much life into the Warcraft universe.

My favorite would probably be Mean Streets. It had probably the most backstory outside of cards. We got all the newspapper stuff and a whole facebook messenger game. And it took the most liberties with WoW story.

Rise of Evil is also very good. The idea of all the Hearthstone unique characters banding together and the way Dalaran, a very popular WoW destination was portraited in this goofy way. This is the peak of what's HS bending of the Warcraft story is all about. (too bad the rest of the year was so meh)

The same reason why I also love Scholomance, just the way this magic school has been portrayed as this goofy college movie.

Ashes of Outland had a very cool looking theme aswell, the new spin of the whole Mecha-Jaraxus making an army of scrap metal and demons from the survivors of Outlands was such an unique take on future of Burning Crusade. Not to mention that it also tied in with the Boomsday Project, storywise.

Also like to mention Kobolds and Catacombs, because that one is thematically and art-wise, my most favority expansion. Every card and every Dungeon Run boss just feels so natural in the Hearthstone catalogue.

My two favorite expansions are Knights of the Frozen Throne (yes I know) and Kobolds and Catacombs. Reasons are purely subjective, for me it is the blend of really good single player content (to this day I think KaC has the best PvE content of any expansion), backstory and new mechanics and cards (some of them were rather broken but that is another topic). Overall I tend to rate the older expansions higher, but that could just be me being nostalgic.

English is not my native language, so please excuse occasional mistakes

In terms of story, it has to be Barrens - Alterac. Its not really because its story is top notch, pulitzer prize material, but because its one of the few that actually attempted a story and pulled it off decently. The only other 3 expansion-long storyline is from RoS - DoD, and honestly the plot there is riddled with holes and poor execution. So within its merits, the merc story is going well (given how the recent Tavish storyline went), but certainly lots of room for improvement.

In terms of soundtrack, there can be no better than RoS. The song really clicks, with that cheesy over-the-top theme, of which I really enjoyed. Other soundtracks worth a mention: Boomsday, K&C, and Naxx.

Super unpopular opinion, but my favourite expansion is The Witchwood. I just love the flavour of the set, and I honestly did enjoy the meta at the time even if it got old very quickly. For the first time since I started playing Hearthstone all the way back in open beta, I actually made an effort to rank up. I found a deck that was both enjoyable for me and mildly competitive (my favourite kind of competitive) - Big Deathrattle Hunter with Kathrena Winterwisp, Carnivorous Cube, and Play Dead to cheat out King Krush and Charged Devilsaur for lethals. That was a good time.

EDIT: As for favourite songs: The Witchwood is also my favourite expansion song, because I love that Disney feel. For the same reason, I adore the Mercenaries trailer. Saviors of Uldum is also just fantastic with those high notes, ho-lee. This isn't a song, but I also love the KotFT trailer. I wish Hearthstone did more sets with that kind of gravitas.

    Hmm. Turns out he's dead.

I remember enjoying Kobolds the most. It was awesome to see HS pay respects to D&D which it is heavily influenced by and the original Dungeon Runs were so addictive.

Song of course goes to SoU, theyll never top that hit XD
