New(?) card game

Submitted 2 years ago by

Hi folks!

Is anyone playing Skyweaver?

https://www.skyweaver.net/

I just started playing it and seems really nice. Might look like HS but it's really not. There are different layers of complexity to it that make it fresh and interesting.

Now, has anyone played enough of it to know if it's playable without paying any money even later down the road? I.e. not becoming frustrating and such.

Thanks!

I mean, sure, you can invest your energy in a new, mostly unknown card game that looks kinda like HS, but is more complex and more interesting.

OR, you could join up with Legends of Runeterra, which is basically all of that, but we know FOR SURE that you never, ever have to spend money on cards. Period. Full Stop.

The fact that it's NFT based is a huge red flag for me.

Wouldn't compare the two, since Runterra has very different mechanics that not everyone might like (I, for one, don't like the combat).

Still not touching Skyweaver with a mile-long Pokey Stick because it uses crypto crap.

Not saying we need to pay for anything. Seems really nice even as f2p.

There is a mode where you battle opponents with decks of completely random cards from the "classes" that your hero has (at least that's what I think happens). Like a free-cost arena with random decks. I have to say that battles end up being really interesting, especially against other people that have experience in card games.

In other words, the crypto thing doesn't mean anything yet. Quite enjoying the mechanics and such. I don't care about constructed decks yet either - still need to gather cards it seems, and there are lots of them.

So, if anyone has more experience in the later stages of this game, please do share your thoughts. I'm curios for an insight into the future.

So from my read of the site alone, I can tell you a few things

No rotation guarantee: Obviously misses out on the entire point of a standard rotation and they aren't looking into the future of this game.  If this game were to never recieve expansions, or they were in a system like runeterra where you can only use one of group A or group B cards with the new group C cards, but not every card in your collection in one deck, you don't need a rotation. However, in pretty much all other cases, you will run into synergy-creep, not just power-creep where new cards have to look good to be wanted, but the simple act of the card existing and being slightly more synergistic than another card in your deck leads to Yugioh, where all games end by turn 2 because you played your entire hand, half your deck, and overkilled

Trade system with free to earn cards: Any player of MMO's can tell you how much free to earn resources becomes hyperinflated to a point of worthlessness if you're allowed to use it in trades and earn any number of said resources. Added onto this, in card TCG's, you don't need more than the card limit of each card, which is why duplicate cards of the original Artifact card game's starter kit ended up becoming useless, nobody would buy, and it was simply a waste of a pack if got all starter cards. It's either that, or you will hit a brick wall like most free to play games that shower you at the start in order to make you feel good and play more.

NFT: It's a pump and dump scheme. They always are. They literally always are. I'm sorry. And the fact that the game pretty much plays exactly like Hearthstone with little to nothing new or original makes me lean even more towards thinking that they're just trying to make a quick dollar by getting people into the cult so they can sell their own NFT cards to them.

I mean, sure - not liking the combat is a good reason not to play LoR.

I just cannot really comprehend, personally, why anyone would not like the combat system of LoR. Assuming they take some time to get used to it.

My issue is that it's a reactive system (your opponent attacks, and you choose what to block with), while I prefer more proactive versions (you can choose what you attack into), like Hearthstone.

Yes, you could describe the LoR combat system as reactive. I'd prefer to call it interactive and tactical - you can't just do whatever you want on your turn. You have to anticipate what your opponent will do. Likewise, you don't just sit around and twiddle your thumbs on your opponent's turn - you have to prepare for how you will respond to them.

Everyone is different, and I don't really have a problem if you don't like the LoR system. But for me, I've played LoR for quite some time, and I played HS for two years before that ... and I've gone back into HS again recently and played for about a month ... and HS is just not nearly as engaging or interesting in the actual gameplay. Maybe in the deck choices and reading the meta and choosing the mulligan - there is some depth of strategy there. But once the mulligan is finished, the game is, like, 80% decided already before the first card is played. Not my style, personally.

Oh, you misunderstand. I LOVE the way players take turns playing minions, and the spell speeds are great. My issue is literally with how minions bonk each-other in the face. If you could choose what minions to attack into (basically if all of them had Challenger), it'd be the perfect game for me.

I thought it was gonna be some random indie game. It actually looks decent.

It's hard enough for me to keep up with 2 card games though with Hearthstone and Runeterra. I only really pay for Hearthstone because I can't afford to pay for both.

    The world will know doom.

Skyweaver cards are eternal. Cards are never banned nor rotated out of play. This means the time you invest building up your skills, card collection and decks is never lost. All cards will always be relevant. That’s a guarantee.

This sound like something what cannot be achieved, especially with all card will always be relevant part. Most of the cards is and will be irrelevant. Look at MTG, HS etc.
