Competition Theme: That's So Random

What's the most out there competition we could come up with? Something absolutely nobody would see coming, just truly... unexpected?

  • You must create a card which has the word 'random' in its card text
    • We'll also be accepting the word 'randomly', for those interested in choosing targets as such

ChickyChick is after some truly random cards this week, so make sure you put your most creative foot forward for this one!

As always, I can be reached through Discord or here on the site via PM if you have any issues to report.

He an expert puppeteer, but he also knows how to pull some strings in over places.

"You want Ragnaros to hit that minion? Sure, I can help you with that."

Note that it cannot cause cards to choose illegal targets, so for example it cannot cause an effect like Deadly Shot or Ragnaros to hit one of your own guys, or something like Greybough to apply to an enemy minion. In cases like this, the card will still work as normal.

The name is referring to Moxie Lockspinner, a gnome thief. Not a major character, but still something lol. Keep in mind that the randomness is not limited by class: you might end up with a Woecleaver or a Silver Sword, or maybe just something stupid like Molten Blade.

I've recently introduced my girlfriend to the Ace Attorney series, so it inspired me to do something for the newly announced expansion.

I understand this is difficult to balance because it's a pretty new mechanic, but I wanted to try nonetheless.

I went with Undead art because it seems to be the thing for the new expansion, too.

Been waiting for an excuse to use this one for a while.

Note that it can also pull spells from Rogue itself. I figured it made the most sense to include the entirety of each school.

    A kind of "defensive" tool.

Support for QL and Naga mage.

New card ahoy! Very slow week, so I'll just post some feedback now.

    Linkblade91
We did talk about this, but I do still believe the cost should be upped. Compare this to my old 3 mana 1-Attack weapon for Warrior for no text and basically infinite Durability. This is much stronger than that.

    Wailor

I prefer the Rogue version personally. It's much more fun and I think the pool is better from a gameplay perspective. I think the pool is simply too small for the Warrior one.

I would also make the Infuse effect a bit stronger since it doesn't seem particularly significant at the moment.

    AeroJulwin

A lot of Rogue in this competition it seems.

I think the card is pretty cool. The flavor is really nice, and it ties into the ability very well. My only gripe is that the card would logically have tokens for each spell school (similar to Druid's Choose One cards) and you wouldn't be able to fit them all anywhere in submission.

    R

I like Marin Noggenfogger as a more grounded version of the original from MSoG. The only little problem I see is that "until" is misspelled on the card with two ls. I must also ask, is he related to Marin the Fox?

Lady Sarevess immediately makes me think of Sorcerer's Apprentice combos which would be dangerous, but since that card isn't very good anymore, maybe this is fine?

    FEEDBACK

    Demonxz95
Stringpuller - Very interesting tech card for random effects. But why "chose a minion"? Also what about 1 mana cost? But it could potentially be broken in some specific deck. Don't even know…

Clock Tower - Since the player can choose when to activate the effect (right?), he can return a good minion and make it cheaper, or return only the opponent's minion and then play his own after that.

    P.S. Marin is Noggenfogger's name.

    Linkblade91
So the only one counter to this weapon is rarely seen [Hearthstone Card (Kobold Stickyfinder) Not Found]? Seems OP.

    Wailor
I like the rogue version more. Maybe leave the randomness and make infuse "it costs (2) less"?

    AeroJulwin
There's a selection of schools, but it's very much like a Jackpot!. And the fact that it can also give rogue class spells is not very good for burgle rogue.

Alright, scrapping the weapon. How about I rebalance an idea of mine I really liked from last Season?

You can hit a wide board and possibly kill off something weak (anything that falls to 0 Health would die), or maybe you can triple up on a tall minion and really reduce their threat level. It's like a Neutral version of Devolving Missiles.

My previous card was pretty flavorful, but also kinda boring, so here's a new one.

Of course I can build a Mechwarper out of these scraps. I'll just need some chewing gum.

This one has the issue of belonging to a very old expansion and using a specific mechanic from it which wasn't very succesful to begin with. But I think it's fun, both gameplay and flavor wise.

    Feedback:

    Demonxz95
Clock Tower seems like a very believable Location for Rogue, but it's very tricky to balance considering what we currently know about this type of cards. Also, it's not very flashy: just what you'd expect from a Rogue Location. This isn't necessarily something bad, the Locations we know so far are also like this.

Stringpuller, on the other hand, is cool and has a nice flavor, but it's a bit too on the nose, if you know what I mean.

All in all, I'm not really sure which card I prefer, since their design philosophies are more or less opposite.

    linkblade91
The effect is very fitting for a swiss army knife type of weapon, but it's a very tricky card. 5 Mana is already a pretty high cost for a weapon, so I think it's alright.

I disagree with Demon about it being stronger than an infinite weapon: this one can't be buffed and will usually deal small amounts of damage, so there's that.

EDIT: Just realized you posted a new card. I like the effect, but it's strange that shurikens cause a debuff. Maybe try a different flavor, dunno.

    AeroJulwin
Very original effect, although the flavor of magic rings is a bit strange for Rogue.

    R
I like Lady Saravess, but the fact she can get spells from other classes feels weird. Her text is already very crowded, so I'm not sure how to fix it.

I'm not a fan of Marin Noggerfogger, though.

Well this week i have only weak ideas. "Random" is something i always try to avoid on my cards and i feel it's kinda limited in scope. Majority of the cards will be "deal damage randomly" or "generate random cards (most likely spells)" i bet. Anyway, this is what i managed to come up with:

Cascade is simple in concept but not sure how to make it less wordy. I followed the text format of Rolling Fireball.

cool idea, seems balanced enough. Not sure how good the effect might be in practice but it's certainly novel.

    linkblade91

It's balanced and kinda cool. The shrinking/weakening aspect of shurikens is a bit forced in flavor, but it's a decent card.

    Wailor

Bit of a Gazlowe powercreep, but it's better than the witness.

    AeroJulwin

Honestly best card here, 5 stars from me and already a winner in my book.

    R

Marin is a cool callback and works great for this comp. Lady Sarevess is a bit too complicated and weird.

    Demonxz95

Location, bold move. We can't quite tell how strong or bad they will be, but this seems alright, on the weaker side. 5 mana for a random Sap and Shadowstep is kinda costly but it can't be too cheap either. In the end the random part kinda makes this unplayable imo but it's a good concept otherwise.

    I'll boop you

Edited Taran Zhu to say "poison darts" instead of shurikens, to maximize flavor and intention. Probably should have made him a Rogue card while I was at it, but I like the idea of him being available to everyone.

    Feedback:

    Show Spoiler

BasilAnguis - Chain healing is neat, but I don't think anyone really needs it in their deck. How often will Cascade just be "Restore 20 Health to a minion; excess goes back to your face"? As in, a Greater Healing Potion with more steps. Roll the Wheel might win flavor-votes but I don't think it's a good idea for the game, personally.

Wailor - Spare Parts were interesting, to me at least, so this has my vote :) I like it more than either Unreliable Witness, mostly because I don't like the idea of messing with new mechanics before we've had a chance to experience them ourselves and get a good idea of balance.

Demonxz95 - It's hard to evaluate Clock Tower when we have zero experience with Locations right now. I would personally avoid them. Stringpuller is a fine card; I'd stick with that one.

R - The tiny text of Lady Sarevess implies to me that the card is too complicated, trying to make sure that everything fits on there that is "appropriate". I also think she's just dangerous in general, as a cheap late-game refill. Marin is more amusing; just change his first name to avoid conflict with Marin the Fox.

AeroJulwin - I like it; don't have much to add. I will say that it is rather similar to Clever Disguise, though.

I did consider the token issue on my card, but since it requires far more than you can submit I figured people would get the general idea.

I really like both effects, but agree Stringpuller is the safer option. It could make some mediocre cards more considerable and even see some interesting combos. I do think it needs to be a 1-Cost to be worth it. Also, rigging a Brawl is sacrilege.

I do expect location cards to be very popular right now and Clock Tower is also interesting, but I think it provides a bit too much control at its current durability. Good job on nailing the effect, though. It doesn't seem like it would work as well as a single cast spell effect, which is exactly what we want to see on location cards. I'd probably keep this one for the inevitable location comp.

    linkblade91
Saw you already submitted. Still a big fan of that card.

    Wailor
I agree with what Demon said about the weapon pool.

I am honestly very biased since I've never played Wild and GvG had already rotated out when I started playing Hearthstone, so I simply can't seem to get excited over Agus MechGyver's effect. I like Unreliable Witness's effect better (which I deem more important), although Agus does have better flavor.

    R
I think Power Rings would perform just fine in Thief Rogue, since Rogue mainly has Shadow spells, so you could just pick a different option.

Marin Noggenfogger is more in line with the spirit of this comp, which might prove profitable. And Lady Sarevess does seem a little dangerous.

    BasilAnguis
I like Cascade. It gives minion healing some well deserved attention without sacrificing face healing. I do think Priest already has a lot of the latter one, so I think the cost and healing could be reduced. Roll the Wheel is solid and fits the idea behind the comp well, but is not as interesting. Also, I'm assuming the wheel is fixed in place, so shouldn't it spin?

    Off of AeroJulwin's feedback, here's a 1-mana version.

    Extra feedback

    Linkblade91
You've already submitted, so I can't assist you any further, but the card looks quite solid.

    Wailor
Not gonna lie, I feel like Gazlowe could've had this exact text and it would've worked perfectly fine. I think the card is fine, and it could be pretty fun.

    BasilAnguis

Both of these are strange cards.

In practice, Cascade seems to work best when it's just a 5 mana "restore 20 Health to your hero". It's bad at healing a full board since Divine Hymn or even just Neferset Ritualist does that job for much cheaper. I feel like this is not exactly what you had in mind with the card.

I don't really like Roll the Wheel. I think the range of RNG it has is not fun for either player, and it's also quite easy to game the system by just not having minions.

Congrats Demon! Very cool flavor and I love the art.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?
