As a Hearthstone player have you ever tried WoW?

Submitted 4 years, 8 months ago by

Hearthstone is heavily based around the lore of the WoW universe, does this incentivise you to try it or had you already played it before starting Hearthstone?

For me personally, Hearthstone introduced the Warcraft universe in an interesting way leading to me playing the game on a regular basis.

I played WoW for long enough to get Liadrin or whatever her name is and disliked it so much I will never play it again.

Love the lore and characters and stories but the gameplay is just not for me. I even watch Taliesin and Evatel on YT to keep up to date with the game.

Not dissing, I am just not an mmorpg person.

I first played Wow when we got a new paladin hero for reaching level 20 in the game. Reached lvl 20 and never played it again.

Sadly not my cup of tea.

My only previous experience with the Wow universe was with the Original Warcraft RTS games

Lemushki - The one and only since the 2006 rebranding.

I've played WoW for 10 years, from its release until the end of the Cataclysm expansion. But then life has taken so much of my time that I cannot play a mmorpg at the level I want, so I prefered to freeze and move into something else instead of keep up as a casual.

But I've been interested in Warcraft's lore since WC1, so I've always been interested in every quest, every event and the like. Actually I keep updated on what's going on even if I don't play anymore.

Played WoW to get the Paladin hero.

Very bad experience - players standing, waiting to respawn for NPC, then one kills him, rest is standing and waiting for respawn....

    I prefer singleplayer RPGs

I played Warcraft 3 and Dota for a long time, but never got to World of Warcraft itself. Mostly because i played another huge MMO at the time, Lineage 2, for several years and i knew what kind of time sink it would be for me to start WOW, so surprisingly enough, i was strong enough to resist :)

Tho i am very sad that i have limited knowledge about Warcraft lore today, it would let me appreciate the connections in Hearthstone more or give me an edge when creating content for the game. I mean i look things up, but sometimes i just dont know what im missing, since i never got to play WOW and might not even know i should be looking for it in a first place :/

Thats why i love reading articles about lore and see ppl talk about certain events and such, i can learn a lot from that and make connection between characters i didnt know existed.

I play WoW, I played it and I will probably play it in the future. Ever since I was a kid, I felt in love with RPGs and the aforementioned MMO allows me to explore certain classes and dive into the fantasy of the game. My favourite class has always been druid (which isn't the case in hs). I just love transforming into different creatures and taking differerent roles - the one of a dps (melee and range) and a tank.

Right now I play in a private Wotlk server, because I had fun playing this expansion before and I haven't killed the Lich King yet.

I've been playing WoW since 2009, but recently just off and on. I think the fact that Hearthstone was based on Warcraft is what really got me interested in it. I got into the Hearthstone beta and I've been playing ever since!

Played WoW for over 10 years with no breaks in between (outside of the occasional computer dying & needing to be replaced). I was a major mount/title/ach/transmog collector with close to or a little over 300 mounts by the time I quit in early WoD (with almost all tcg mounts, rbg, mounts, many 1% raid and dungeon drop mounts, etc).

    Good times :)

Played WoW, don't have time for it anymore and don't like the direction the game has gone. Will be Horde for life though. FOR TEH HORDE!

You have to play Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and it's expansion Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne if you haven't done it yet (or wait for Warcraft 3: Reforged). The story/campaign is epic and the gameplay is pretty good. It's also the game that made me love elves in most fantasy settings, although I still hate almost all of the Tolkien (Arwen is one of the few exceptions) and Warhammer Fantasy "pointy ears" with passion. :P :P :P

I should look at the original warcraft games as some of the major characters I believe are present in both Warcraft and modern WoW. Can't wait for Reforged to have the updated experience.

Warhammer has some of the best elves ever created, especially the dark elves, Malekith, Morathi and Malus are so well written. I get High ones are dicks but they are supposed to be. Telcis, Alarielle and Alith Anar in particular are fricking awesome though. Tyrion is douchey no arguement there lol.

I didn't even know Hearthstone was based on Warcraft when my friend invited me to play. Warcraft III was the game from my childhood, so to see these characters again here makes me feel right at home. I have played only very little bit of WoW, but I still keep track of the storyline by reading the forums and wikia.

Meh, you can't be serious... Most Blood Elves and Night Elves are far more convincing than any Warhammer Fantasy elf. WHF elves are (and were...) so cliché it hurts, although I have to admit most of their miniature range has always been awesome.

I have almost never played wow because money (and time, that is also money, but I can't talk about time 250 hours of skyrim after). I like the universe, but I still prefer single player RPG.

I remember that I was a wargen warlock, and that's all.

The exact time frame or order of when I played certain games is a blur to me as it was so long ago.  At some point I played Warcraft 2 and 3 and enjoyed them for their single player lore, characters, and plots.  I was at a point where I had started moving on from mostly Nintendo exclusive games which dominated my childhood, and I got heavily attached to a little known RPG series called Final Fantasy.

I played Final Fantasy 4-10 (American Numbers) and X-2 multiple times each and loved just about every minute.  I considered myself a completionist at the time and  finished almost 100% of the side quests and item gathering in most of the games (Fuck Blitzball though.  I wasn't grinding through that shit). A MMORPG was a turn off for me because an ever-expanding story would be seemingly difficult to keep up with.  Final Fantasy 12 was a huge disappointment for me.  It felt and looked like a MMORPG even though I had never played one before.  13 also sucked and I quit Final Fantasy at that point.

I had played Final Fantasy so much that I burnt out on it.  By the time WOW came out, I knew that I did not want to get addicted to another game like Final Fantasy that I would never be able to experience even 75% of what it had to offer.  I certainly did not want to pay a monthly fee on top of that for the addiction or spend a lot of money on any one game so I swore I would never play it.

Then one day Hearthstone got popular, and I noticed it had some of the characters from Warcraft 3.  Curiosity got the best of me eventually so I got on the train more than halfway through The Grand Tournament.  It was all under control though because I was going to be FTP arena type player and not get addicted or spend money.

Fast forward to today:  I have spent more money trying to stay current in Hearthstone than I care to admit, and I sit here wondering if maybe a past WOW addiction would have been the better option!

Played all Warcraft games, I, II and III. Always loved its lore. Played also Dota1 since it first released as a map of warcraft III.

Warcraft was why I started to Hearthstone. Maiev, Illidan and Voljin was my favorite characters from universe in Warcraft III times and I was a fan of MTG, Warcraft TCG and other card games like Pokemon TCG. I couldn't afford to play MTG and Warcraft TCG because I am living in a little town and there was noone or no shops who sells the cards. I heard that there is an upcoming free-to-play online Warcraft Card game coming and I could join it in beta.

I couldn't afford to play WoW at first release because of money issues and I was just 13 years old. I have been playing other MMO's and alwas had wondered WoW because of I was a Warcraft fan. Me, My brother and my friends have been playing so much fan-made maps on LAN and online. We've always been playing Warcraft III multiplayer on LAN. We were real fans of Warcraft Universe. :P

Then I had tried it from a friend's account. It was TBC times when I have first tried it and loved it. Then I got it from a giveaway in Cataclysm with all expansions. Started and played it for 3 months. Then I left it. It bored me because of its mechanics but even though I don't play the game, I always tried to follow its lore from web.

I mean, auto-attack MMORPGs were/are not for me anymore. I had been playing TERA, Elder Scrolls Online and some other games which has same mechanics with Tera and ESO. Choosing your enemy with Tab and your characters auto attacks it is no more for me. It is a really old mechanic tbh which is still WoW's mechanic in late 2019.

I really liked how TERA handled this but still I love Warcraft's lore but I'm a little worried about it because they changed a lot of things. They even changed some connections which I remember from Warcraft III. Yes I'm still a fan but not like before.

And like the others, I had played again for Lady Liadrin and now planning to play Classic WoW when it would been released but I'm not so sure. I want to play it for its old lore but can't be sure if it is worth it or not because of the mechanics which I mentioned above.

Edit: Btw, it's not just Warcraft for me. We growed up with all of the Blizzard games. Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft (didn't really know The Lost Vikings was a game :P) and they are all connected for me really. Now, I have all the games of Blizzard, including Overwatch and HotS. Playing all time to time, I'm still an active player of Overwatch and HotS but I feel really sad about Blizzard's current state and a bit angry. :)

I started playing WoW during it's late vanilla days just before the Burning Crusade expansion. Played through Wraith of the Lich King and i absolutely loved the lore and the journey that the quests took me on. It was just so epic and immersive, and Death Knights were just the best thing. I still have the DVD-ROM here for memories. Immediately after launch i had ground out a blood Death Knight to the level cap of what i believe was 80 at the time, then stopped playing because i was young and really didn't get the whole 'raiding' concept at the time.

When i met my wife one of the first things we talked about was WoW and it was definitely a huge part of that connection. I had coincidentally gotten an email from blizzard offering to 'resurrect' my account and give me the Cataclysm expansion for free along with some play time and it was unquestionably accepted. We played a lot together through the story of Pandaria. The Timeless Isle was the most memorable experience, along with maintaining a farm of useful mats with The Tillers on Halfhill. It offered so many cool things and it was such a blast to immerse yourself in, and that is a damn good thing because it came with a huge content drought afterwards. I ended up finally getting myself the very rare Reins of the Thundering Onyx Cloud Serpent mount which was really cool to fly around on.

Later on i played through Warlords of Draenor, completed a lot of the raids and everything. The story and everything leading up to it as well was just so epic. Back to the roots and back in time through the Dark Portal with Grommash and Garrosh in their homeland before it became the Outland that was featured in the Burning Crusade expansion. Garrosh tries to alter the history of the Orcs and ultimately ends up being slain by Thrall. The cinematic for this was EPIC, you can check it out here.

The launch was horror and i literally had to get my wife to log me in to queue behind thousands of players in the hopes that i would be able to get into the server and play by the time i got home from work. Blizzard seemed to have a meltdown with that launch. It was understandable when the game was new but come on, 5 expansions in now and Blizzard is that unprepared? Small indie company indeed. I enjoyed the story and played a lot but overall it was a terrible expansion compared to the rest because there was so little content up-front that people consumed overnight, as massive as WoW is.

Just before Legion was announced i quit playing and have not returned since. I had just grown out of the whole RPG element of Warcraft, but i still enjoy the lore a lot. It was not my first experience to Warcraft however as i knew all about the previous Warcraft games; my brother played through them heavily and i believe he still plays WoW himself, but this was the first time i had played a game involving it myself and it's been a huge part of my life as a person and as a gamer. Future business decisions aside, they created a masterpiece of a world and look at how far it has come. A lot of creativity and passion went into it, from Chris Metzen especially. Thrall is modeled after him and he even did the voice acting for Thrall, Varian, Ragnaros, Vol'Jin, Nefarian, Hakkar, Saurfang, and apparently even Bastion from Overwatch. TIL, LOL. Most recently he had a major part in the creative direction of Sigma in Overwatch, although he is retired. Very cool dude.

So yeah. I started with the intention of a casual reply to this and ended up providing an essay reflecting on all the epic content i have experienced throughout the years. Definitely worth giving WoW a try if it is something you are interested in. It's more accessible now than it has ever been but i can't speak for the newest content. I am just more of an FPS/Strategy type of gamer these days. Love to see this lore reflected in Hearthstone and extrapolated from in whimsical ways. For more lore content regarding Hearthstone you might enjoy this page.

I played WoW about a year ago to get Liadrin, I enjoyed it. Not enough to spend money on, but the world was really interesting and the gameplay wasn't terrible. It was my first time playing a MMORPG of that scale and it was awesome to see how big some of those maps are. Coincidentally I played a worgen druid less than a month before Witchwood was announced, so I understood a lot of the references.

    Gosh dang it, cards bad.

Been a Wow player since vanilla up to legion. I stopped playing somewhere halfway. I didn't like the direction they were going. Wow has not been the reason I play HS. But after the break from WoW it definitely gives me the nostalgia feeling. Will always miss WoW and love it, and who knows maybe in the future I return, but dunno

Played wow from launch but nowadays I play to do the story then unsubscribe and wait a few months for more content. I used to be playing it every day for hours.

I would say wow made me play hearthstone. I don't play card games really and if it wasn't for the wow link I wouldn't have tried hearthstone.
