Pleasant Surprises from Uldum

Submitted 4 years, 8 months ago by

As most expected, Uldum has been a pretty powerful and impactful set. But even then, there are cards that I did not think would be very good or competitive. But, I have been pleasantly surprised by a handful of cards from this set.

- Highlander decks are competitive
I didn't have much hope for these decks. I thought Elise would see play in combo, but I didn't think the payoff was there for the other cards. Now, about a week in, both Mage and Hunter have successful Highlander decks. Zephyrs also shows up in places you wouldn't expect, like Rogue.

- The paladin quest has a place
I was pretty low on most of the paladin set, but the mummy quest deck has a place in competitive hearthstone. I certainly think the deck could stand to receive a few more playable reborn minions, but right now, it works just fine as a hard counter to warrior and a fine check to slower mages.

- Khartut Defender
A lot of neutral taunts were released in this set. I would not have expected that Khartut Defender would be the best one. But I guess it's worth it to pay 3 mana for 3 keywords that all synergize with each other.

Has anything surprised you from SoU?

Aggro warrior being really competitive looking at its winrates across the board.

Murloc paladin with Finley, Zephrys and Nomi being a thing. Although we'll have to see if this deck will actually survive.

And quest paladin for me as well.

Well there are some cards i thought would not be that good like the above mentioned Paladin Quest for example. But most surprisingly for me are the Highlander Decks. Never thought that Highlander Hunter could be that good. And i surely thought Chef Nomis time was over but still it found it´s way back into the meta - at least for now.

I also underestimated Zephrys at the beginning but right now this is one of the best cards (or at least very strong).

    Hi

I am hard to surprise. The first decks i made were nomi Murloc padadin and  a quest paladin 😇

Also druid beeing played a lot and the quest close to OP was expected.

I thought that i will see quest priest a lot and it will take a top place in the meta but where are they?

I just wanted to see something done about the onslaught of token decks, mostly paladin.  I lived through the MSoG tokens, and was glad to see them go from Standard... and here they are again.

Quest shaman actually kinda sucks. Pretty sure the quest will get dropped soon and shaman will be all murlocs, or aggro token.

Bomb warriors disappeared. I thought with Highlander returning, warriors would still run bombs. But instead they're just running more broken crap to bring their boring board clearing control deck to the max.

Priest still sucks (not truly surprised, but figured there might be one deck that shined)

Not surprised by much else. Becoming pretty disappointed with how the meta is shaping up. Hopefully some new powerful decks emerge soon to start shaking things up.

Highlander Hunter being a relatively strong deck is surprising. Dinotamer Brann + Zephrys the Great is enough to restrict a deck into a singleton, who knew.

Aggro/Tempo Warrior is seemingly strong according to some sites, but when I play it I get slaughtered by other more aggressive decks out there. I don't face it as much on ladder too.

Quest Paladin is actually viable, despite being voted one of the worst quests.

Was not expecting Highlander Mage to be remotely good, so that's a suprise. Glad to see Quest Paladin having a place in the meta. I suspect Quest Druid and Quest Shaman to drop off soon, they seem bad.

    Gosh dang it, cards bad.

Well, i knew Highlander Hunter was going to be good enough, so that's not a surprise to me. :p

I'll be admittedly surprised if Nomi Paladin survives the meta. The design is pretty smart, and fancy too, i hope it succeeds to some extent.

I'm also partially surprised by Quest Paladin, i thought the condition was too harsh, but anyway i find it so boring that it leaves me neutral, even if i actually own card.

I was expecting that Sir Finley of the Sands/"highlander" Paladin would happen, but I wasn't expecting it to be built around Tip the Scales and Chef Nomi.

Jambre's hand paladin is also a really pleasant surprise. I think that it would see a lot more play if the Murloc Aggro wasn't so highrolly
