thoughts on PokeMon Sword/Shield

Submitted 4 years, 9 months ago by

I know fans of the series are up in arms about the recent changes coming in with the blessing that is a console core installation of PokeMon. That being said, here's my take on things.

  • The game looks gorgeous and I'm incredibly excited to enjoy both tall grass and wandering encounters. I think both means of engaging wild PokéMon have a place in the main series and offer a better overall experience regarding immersion (much more than past titles).
  • The new mechanic - Dynamax - is a silly gimmick that forgoes the complexity and openness that Mega Evolution brought in X/Y. Mega PokéMon were and still are the best mechanic to enter the series, transforming average or even "bad" monsters to competitive tanks and sweepers. I mean, it made Beedrill a terrifying force to be reckoned with! Even Z-moves were more inventive, although they catered to the competitive tournament aspect of the game more than Megas ever did imo. Dynamax fails to bring anything unique to the series other than the opportunity to engage in raid battles (which didn't need Dynamax to come to fruition). They're just big, which means they're stronger. How revolutionary. Kappa
  • The absence of the National Dex feels very bad to a lifetime fan and player such as myself, but I wouldn't skip this game for it. The National Dex is something I've worked very hard on completing in every generation (I'm currently only missing a couple event legendaries like Marshadow!) and it feels strange and wrong to think of my hard-trained and collected PokéMon being cherry-picked for admission into the new generation. That being said, I do not think this will ruin the game. Nintendo and GameFreak could always see their fan base calling out for a full National Dex and bring the new character models in with a patch (why not exclude the non-Galar PokéMon from Dynamax effects to save space and development time?), but I can't say I 100% expect it. Given the increasing file size of each PokéMon and the sheer volume of monsters we now have, it's entirely reasonable for Nintendo to consider limiting how many PokéMon appear in each game. I want the National Dex as badly as the next trainer, but I'm not going to roast Nintendo and GameFreak for a Dex we have no information on regarding its size. Chill out and let's get some more information before we all flip our lids.
  • The new PokéMon designs look fantastic and I can't wait to see the rest (yes, even the moronic-looking Impidimp is fine imo. Just like in nature, not every creature is going to thrill, impress, or draw you in to love it, and that's fine).
  • I hope this generation gives us some real old-school challenges like Whitney's Miltank from Gold/Silver, something that just utterly steamrolls you the first time and makes you reconsider your team and battle plan. The games have felt very easy in the story with the Battle Trees and the like suddenly ramping up in difficulty.

What did you think?

Haven't really been keeping up with the news but always excited about a new Pokemon game. What changes are people so upset about?

Also agree about the Dynamax thing, seems kinda meh. Mega evolutions came with a complete new look and sometimes a new typing, dynamax just makes them big, that's it.

Mostly, everyone is mad that Nintendo announced they will not include every PokeMon from past games for the National Dex, just the Galar regional Dex.

Since we don't know how big the Galar Dex will be, it's silly to get too upset about an indeterminate number of PokeMon not appearing in this generation of games (which, like I said, could technically get patched in anyways). Some people have said they're leaving the series for this, but most of them are just reacting without full information and as new content is trickled out to us, they'll put their pre-orders in and start planning out their teams.

I'm super excited. Haven't played a proper Pokemon gain since Platinum, so there's a LOT of mons I haven't seen before. I don't have a collection of mons from previous games, so while I can understand the issue it isn't a problem for me. Hopefully they'll add more of the missing mons over time in the Wild Areas or as Raids. Dynamax looks like a silly mechanic but it'll be easy to wrap your head around, instead of only some Pokemon having Mega Evolutions or special moves.

I keep saying Platinum. I actually meant Diamond, gen 2

I make bad custom Hearthstone cards sometimes.

I wanted to explore megas more for that very reason: there are so many PokéMon that don't have that form yet! I feel like Dynamax would have made more sense in the Let's Go! versions of the game, given it's considered by Nintendo as a great jumping off point for new players (alongside the nostalgia for veteran players) and a simpler game. Dynamax's simplicity would have fit very nicely in that game in tone and usage. In Sword and Shield it seems very underwhelming, but it's not going to stop me from absolutely loving this game

Why do you feel the need to capitalize the mon in pokemon? that's weird..

Dynamax isn't exciting to me... mega evolutions were the best I have a feeling there will not be new designs ("galar forms") or mega forms this time around.

Apart from looking at the statss and design and a bit of competitive 6v6 (not VGC) theorycrafting I am kinda retired from that franchise, I used to play a lot of pokemon showdown back in gen 5~6

I am ok with a smaller roster in the game.. I mean.. you have too many of them anyway it's hard to implement them again and again and again in every game.. finding a way to obtain them.. getting a model it's hard.. and it keeps getting harder..

I guess it's just how I'm used to seeing it asa kid. The logo looks capitalized and it stands for Pocket Monsters, so it's just how I've always written it  ¯\_()_/¯

And yeah, it's completely understandable why there would be limitations in an exponentially expanding roster of creatures that's likely to reach 1k by the 9th generation. Just takes some adjusting to after 23 years of seemingly endless expansion

its very hard to up the difficulty in pokemon.

because it all depends on your pokemon team.

as an example: i had a very hard time against totem araquanid in pokemon ultra moon/sun however other people breezed through araquanid because they had a hawlucha with the flying z move.

Well i personaly am so freakin Hyped for Pokemon Sword & Shield - played every Pokemon since Red & Blue and wished for a "Real" Pokemon Game on Console (playabler on TV) for so long - and now i finaly get that!!!

I'm also one of the few Fans who are not that angry about not including the Whole National Dex - i think the almost 500 Pokemons that will be in there will be enough for now :)  - and i'm also sure they will give us updates regarding the Map and even Pokemons :)

The new pokemons look ok - yes some way better than others but so far i mostly like the designs - with a few exceptions of course :)

The Dyna and Gigantamaxing is ok i guess but not that exciting to me personaly - that's a feature i could live without but also have not a problem with as long as it isn't crucial to the game - for example: If the game would force you to use it - otherwise you would not win that would be a Bummer!

I also like the character customization very much and i think the game looks awesome! Sure it is not an Xbox with 4K but i do not need that - i realy like the look so far and hope that both the story and characteristics in the game will be awesome!

The only feature i think is a total fail and totaly in the wrong place here is the "Curry-Dex" - i mean i wanna play pokemon and not overcooked - this feature simply does not work with the Pokemon flavor - at least for me :) - and i hope this is not to prevelent in the game - or even needed to get further in the story somehow :) :)

Challenge me ... when you're ready to duel a god!

    here's my take:

if you buy the game you're supporting laziness on the developer's side and basically signalling them that they can get away with it, which ultimately makes you part of the problem

Therefore and thusly I conclude: anyone who buys this half-assed scam is a drooling fanboy with no sense of self-control or integrity. If you get offended by this you're only proving my point.

Yeah but one thing is criticism (which is fair and I totally support it), another is insulting.

If people cry about a product they nonetheless buy, then it's their fault too and you're right to address it, but you shouldn't provoke like that.

It's not that people can't handle being insulted on the internet: people can't handle being insulted on the internet without any good reason.

I guess it's just how I'm used to seeing it asa kid. The logo looks capitalized and it stands for Pocket Monsters, so it's just how I've always written it  ¯\_()_/¯

Totally agree with OP. The M looks capitalized in the logo. Not so weird.

    Nerd time!

Technically, writing the M in capital isn't wrong at all: in fact, Pokemon stands for "Pocket Monsters".

However, with time writing the name normally (just the first letter in capital) was much quicker, so...

Before I started to use hearthpwn my main lurking forum was serebii, nobody there ever capitalized the M in Pokémon, that's mainly cause it's a main streamed word and there is no need to.

Simply no - so everyone who ever wanted a game like this and hasn't the same oppinion you have is an idiot? There are lots of people who realy like what they did or just simply grateful that they get a new and so far cool looking pokemon game - sure not everything is perfect and they could have made it even better but still - so far (with some exceptions) it looks awesome!

I'm also sure you're one of the people that cried about the missing pokemons and some of the attack animations - this game is not just for Hardcore Competetive Pokemon Players - this is mostly for Casuals and Newcomers - and therefor looks awesome! Yes there will be a small part for the competetive & core players and they will survive with some missing pokemons - but Nintendo is "feeding" not just the Core Gamers - so i think they made (almost) everything right.

I do not care if you call me names or a Nintendo Fanboy but to say everyone who buys it is someone without integrity etc is just plain wrong - at least in my oppinion.

I personaly am happy that we finaly get a cool looking pokemon game i  can play on my TV :)

I do not care if you call me names or a Nintendo Fanboy but to say everyone who buys it is someone without integrity etc is just plain wrong - at least in my oppinion.

I personaly am happy that we finaly get a cool looking pokemon game i  can play on my TV :)

cool. like a moth to the  flame and just about as self aware.

    -at least in my opinion

You either read it wrong or simply not understood what i said but ok, some people only see the bad things in life! :)

    here's my take:

if you buy the game you're supporting laziness on the developer's side and basically signalling them that they can get away with it, which ultimately makes you part of the problem

Therefore and thusly I conclude: anyone who buys this

I agree with you til this point: after it you're just taking it as an excuse to insult peopl

and watch people completely disregard the point because they can't handle being insulted on the internet

"Hey you? Why do you play HS if that makes you salty? You mindless slave, sad fuck trying to find a goal in your pathetic life". See?

So what? nothing you said is wrong. Sorry that I don't want to pretened to be civilized on the fucking internet. I'm not claiming to be the paragon of virtue, I'm just making a point and I'm gonna use whatever language I feel like. If that makes you uncomfortable then it's not my problem.

Civility doesn't matter because people are too retarded to get the point anyways, so I might as well insult them so at least I get something out of the whole thing.
