Reveal season - card discussion in 3 places

Submitted 4 years, 4 months ago by

Why do we have discussion happening about a card in 3 different places? This was something I disliked about Hearthpwn and the same thing happens here

A new card comes out and it is really harder than it needs to be to have a coherent discussion with the community about a new card.

I think the card discussion forum is redundant isn't it?

Also there are 2 places where we can vote for the card ?

Maybe the reveal discussion should be where we talk about the reveal - the "discuss this card" goes to the card page and that is where we vote and discuss?

This isnt an easy solve. The news article will get spamed away from the front page with new ones coming in. We want to encourage ppl to continue discussing the cards, for which forums is better suited. But disallowing any discussion in the news article doesnt make any sense.

I dont think its that big of a deal imho. Yes, initially the discussion can be split, but you can say the same about discussing it on Discord. We just provide multiple options and you can choose whatever suits you best.

I like your idea about "Discuss this card" directing you to card's page in theory, not sure if it would be a good idea long term, but that is something we could consider for next reveal season. We shall see what opinion other Staff members have on this.

About the voting, we made it easier for you to vote on a card. It is enough to vote in one place, thats it. The fact you see the ratings in more places doesnt mean you have to vote several times, you vote once and your vote shows in all the other places as well ;-)

I've never had a big issue with it. Here's how I've always seen it:

    • News Discussion - The lowest barrier of entry, usually the lowest quality of discussion. News posts drop down quickly during reveal seasons and people don't typically page through news posts, so its not likely to get much attention after the initial bit of time.
    • Card Discussion - Fairly hidden considering card pages themselves don't get a lot of traffic which means you have a lower chance of having a discussion at all. Even if we linked to the card pages as the place to discuss them, I don't think it's very approachable because most are likely to have the mindset "it doesn't matter".
    • Forum Discussion - A proper place to converse about a topic. As new discussion takes place, threads get bumped and more people have a chance to talk about that card. The best place for it.

I'd consider the forums to be the best place to discuss cards as it has the best format for a discussion. This is why we're promoting it with the buttons and why we're even making it a part of a giveaway.

As Sinti already covered, the votes, no matter where you see them (news, forums, card pages, expansion guide), are all linked back to the same card. We just give you some additional options on the card pages themselves if you want to rank any card for the different game modes. Having the "overall" rating in multiple places helps us get people to rank the cards.

Personally I think it'd make a lot of sense if news articles automatically got posted as a forum thread with that same title. It'd integrate news and forums a bit more, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for both. It'd also get rid of a lot of duplicate discussion threads, which IMO doesn't just get rid of redundancy, but likely would result in more -and more substantive- discussion.

Card discussion's page is pretty pointless, imho: not many people go there to speak about a certain card; if it's a new one they go under the news or on the forum topic while if it's an old one probably they'll open a new thread about it.

On the other hand the news itself is a decent first-impression gathering place that usually is used just to throw a like/dislike and nothing more.

Forum topics are still the best, since they allow a more deep and interesting discussion also because are often highlighted on the front page.

Maybe the news announcement may have only a link to the proper forum topic (just for new cards, not for every news), in that way it'll be possibile to have a less dispersive and duplicate discussion for each one.

I still think the best option would be to concentrate all discussion on a card on its card page. Why? I think in the long run it will benefit the players who searched for the card, so they can see all opinions in one place. People discussing on three different places seems a bit confusing and chaotic to me.

The way it is now, all those discussions one day will be buried in forum and forgotten. It would be fun to see those opinions later when meta is solved. Card page traffic may be low now but it can be boosted with promotion.

I understand the reasoning of the Sinti and Flux - I have great respect for you both.

Maybe the dream is that the card page is the catch all. Discussions on the reveal and on the forum get mirrored or seen on the card page. Actually any post that tags or links the card gets reflected there.

We do include the link to the card's discussion thread in its card page. So that should cover what you're asking here, basically. If you want to see what ppl had to say about it on release, you can just click the button and read the thread.

I understand what ur saying, but in the end i guess it is the matter of preference and this is how we approach this. For now anyway.

It is good to raise these questions tho, so we can see that ppl might be interested for us to do certain things differently and we can then take that into consideration going forward ;-)

I'm sorry, I haven't noticed the button until now. That changes my opinion, and I sure do respect your decisions, just wanted to add some constructive criticism. Learned something new in the end!

I think that separating pre- and post-release opinions is indeed a good idea.

Since the card thread has very low traffic anyway, it could be a good idea to just get rid of it.

Also, the above idea with the news article creating a unique forum post, which concentrates everything, is awesome in my opinion!

You'd basically have the same "base" disussion (database entry too), but displayed in a different way according to where you access/see the card (news/forum).

Another idea is to do the same but have card-related discussions be posted in the card-related forum, while keeping the general forum pages for something more... general. Like opinions about the reveal, the new expansion, etc.

My reasoning comes from the fact that it's better to see/read more posts (for a card), even if lower quality, than to have very few of them with higher quality. I usually jusy skim over the useless stuff. Some of it can also be reported/moderated if it's spam, etc.

All in all, i don't see a reason to implement more systems/branches of the same system when there are enough tools to easily handle the job already.

I think it makes sense to have separate places to discuss the reveal (I often scan the comments to see if the video is worth watching) and the card itself. However, having a third place doesn't add much value and fragments the discussion, in my opinion.
