THEY CHANGED EVOLVE!!!

Submitted 4 years, 4 months ago by

Prayers have been answered!!!

Was just playing the brawl and used Witchy Lackey on a Lord Godfrey that was played at 2 mana since it came out of the holiday chest. The Evolve mechanic turned it into a Dragonslayer - 1 mana more than the PLAYED COST, not the real cost.

Has anyone else experienced this?!

Hmm, this might be a nerf that's "announced" tomorrow :p

But actually it's probably just a Brawl thing that has costs changed.

I mean it's the fix that people have been suggesting for months, I just near fell out of my chair when it happened since I was NOT expecting that without any sort of announcement. It would be weird for it to only effect the current brawl though? I get Hearthstone is Consistently Inconsistent, but this seem too on-the-nose to be random.

I do hope it is real.

At that point they could also unnerf Conjurer's Calling.

That would be a VERY welcome change.

Someone will have to test this to see if this is just a brawl exclusive thing.

Yeah I played another brawl game and checked - when you drop a discounted minion it shows "on the board" with its real cost, not the discounted cost. So Lord Godfrey definitely had a face cost of 7 on the board when I hit it with the lackey and got a 3 cost minion instead.

I don't have any friends online right now to test in a normal game, so hopefully someone can test (or we'll just find out tomorrow I suppose).

I just played a cheaper Sea Giant with Mutate and...

    It didn't work :((((((

I also noticed that this sometimes happens with single player treasures that reduce the cost of cards, e.g. a minion that costs 1 less because of some Bob's discount will keep costing 1 less even after it was played, including evolve effects. Don't really know why this isn't in the real game though.

    Hopefully this is true.

Could mark the starting point for some big mechanic changes. Cust reduction and the way following cards interact have been non consistent since the beta (another example here is the holy wrath/shirvallah interaction)

I can't figure out why people want this change.

First off, powerful effects are fun. Second, people only started talking about this change after Shaman had gotten its time in the sun (Desert Hare Evolve stuff) when the mechanic had been around forever. And lastly this makes evolve effects and their ilk less friendly to new players by making the effects less obvious on the cards.

It just seems like a needless change all the way down.

It promotes high-rolling and IMMENSE mana cheating and is the reason multiple cards have been nerfed now. Powerful effects are fun if they happen when the opponent has some way of reacting to it. Getting a random 8/8 or 12/12 that also dealt 3 damage to one of your minions on as early as turn 3/4 isn't fun.

I just played a game of tawern brawl and witnessed the same. 0 mana minion from a gift which is a 5 drop normaly, played witchy lackey and resulted into a 1 drop.

Unfortunatelly I was able to make only 1 screenshot from the game history on the left. https://imgur.com/a/ACDFO0N

Minions show their original mana cost on board, but for the transform-effect the actual played mana cost is used.

maybe, just maybe they're using the brawl to playtest this thing

Or it was just a precaution to avoid evolve Shaman taking over the brawl meta as well.

Either way, it at least proves that the change is easily implemented, so maybe it'll go live for the rest of the game as well. Would kinda make the MOgu nerf pointless (although the card was still overpowered as just a 0-mana 3/4 anyways)

I wonder if they'd unnerf Conjurer's Calling if they really went through with this.

    I tried having fun once.

    It was awful.

this mechanic has been hated whenever it came into the meta. The only time when it wasn't broken was the first time Evolve was released because Nerubian Prophet and Thing from Below just weren't that op in combination with Evolve. When the Doppelgangster combo became meta it was equally hated (and that thing wasn't even due to cost reduction)

Conjurer's Calling Meta was godawful (and is just an offshoot of the same issue) and many people hated the Mogu mutate combo even before Tombs of Doom.

Lastly, it's not confusing to new players if they just update the UI to show that a card maintains the cost it was played as long as its on board. It's actually more consistent with any other mechanic this way (at least according to the zone law they explained a year ago, where cards will maintain their changes when moving forwards in zones and lose them when moving backwards)

    I tried having fun once.

    It was awful.

I do agree. Last time I remember being surprise by the evolve not evolving correctly. This, has such a huge impact and if they are able to do it during a brawl event they can do it for ladder.

First off, powerful "fair" effects are always welcome. Nobody's arguing about Antonidas or Alexstraza indeed.
Players are talking about "Cheating": mutate 1 mana in an 8/8 is not the definition of fun, especially if 68% of the playerbase abuse of it.

Second, "people" started talking about Mountain Giant years a go. But you probably haven't started playing yet.

Lastly, I don't think new players cares about this mechanic just because it's "meta".

So based on others' comments and the announced nerfs, it does appear that this interaction is just a one-off rule for this specific brawl. That is personally really weird to me, but okay I guess.

My apologies for the false alarm/giving out false hope everyone!
