Aggro game play.

Submitted 4 years, 10 months ago by

So I have changed my mind about aggro game play. I have been playing mono-red in arena and its giving me a different perspective from aggro in hearthstone. The reason I am playing aggro is because it was a very easy deck to craft with out too many resources and it performs really well. I have to say that the interactions are not too complicated but do you have to be careful with what you play and when. Mono-Red is not just Smorc.

In hearthstone I am always annoyed by aggro game play, however I have a lot of resources so I don't have to resort to it. When new players its a great choice to play cheap aggro decks.  With that in mind I think having cheap aggro decks its actually healthy for the game. To allow new players to come and experience with out too much commitment.

The block system in arena is very interesting and interactive. Would be great to be able to force some minions to block (not just taunt.) like spells or abilities that enable taunt like effect on certain minions.

I find aggro game play in Magic to be a much different beast (pardon the pun) to that of Hearthstone and the reason (for me) is due to something I have complained about in regards to Hearthstone since it's inception: namely, the fact that minions can attack the opponent's face without any preventative action from the opponent.

In Magic, you are given ample opportunity to throw creatures in the way of big attacks, but Hearthstone expects you to just take the damage to the face without a response. It's a huge flaw and one I've always been surprised they continue to refuse to accept they made and won't do anything to rectify it.

The introduction of the Rush mechanic was a half-hearted attempt at fixing things, but it doesn solve either the problem of Charge minions, or (worse) the fact you cant throw minions or spells in the way to stop the opponent attacking you.

Came here to share a similar impression, but more on the side of "Mono-red aggro is BONKERS!!".

I'm also new to the game (having played paper Magic in my teens though) and for similar reasons mono-red aggro was the one I could afford to craft, in a sub-optimal build btw. And still, it's disgustingly effective, winning sometimes in turn 4-5 unless opponent is control/mid-range with some form of healing. Pirate Warrior anyone?

I feel sorry for my opponents, really, as it looks so oppressive. I may be VERY wrong, since low ranks (silver) and very new to the game. If some veteran could corect me, please do. However, meta tracking sites such as https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard#paper show the deck's prevalence in 18%, being the only budget one. All the others are incredibly expensive. I'd love to try the multitude of control, mid-range, dual color, tricolor decks, planeswalker decks but oh, the money... So for now, mono-red aggro is the way to go. Let's see for how long lasts the fun.
