Random champion card removed from level 10+ Vaults

Submitted 4 years, 2 months ago by

I'd like to hear from people who participated in closed beta - how close / far from complete collection do you feel it seemed possible to be as f2p, or how much of it can you hope to get with your estimation of time needed.

How did this random Champion in Vaults 10+ in closed beta helped that, and in contrast not having it would hurt collecting cards going forward. Thanks.

Thing is, if I can't get considerably better collection % over HS, which of course had a head start of years getting cards, I don't see myself breaking the time commitment of past for something that doesn't get better elsewhere.

I know there are different factors, enjoying gameplay / deckbuilding in broadest possible sense, but if I see myself enjoying both, this would be the decisive factor.

It was hard to tell during the closed beta because participants were given a bunch of freebies to be able to build decks for the purposes of testing. I had no issues building a bunch of different decks on a whim, but I'm pretty sure entirely for that reason.

That said, champion cards aren't as important as you'd think. Few decks, if any, ran at the max number of possible champions included. Unlike HS, where some decks can run to 10+ legendaries included, you're more likely to see 3 copies of (say) 2 champions, included specifically because both of them complement the same game plan, coupled with a deck that maximises that game plan.

So yeah, difficult to say really. Wait and see I guess?

If you enjoy the collecting aspect of these games, I'd think LoR would be far more enjoyable since you have so much more control over the process.

I believe there's still a "no duplicate drops" rule for Champions AND epics, which will help a lot if you are free to play.

I'm not f2p, but I am a collector at heart, and the fact that I don't have to rely on randomized packs seems like a godsend to me.

I wasn't in the closed beta, but I did spend last night playing and I'm in a similar frame of mind as you (been playing HS almost daily since Boomsday, F2P except for buying the adventures, curious-yet-reluctant to explore other games), so maybe you'll find my opinions useful.

I will admit that ~3 hours in with $0 spent, I am disappointed that I haven't been getting the cards I originally wanted.  I envisioned fielding a ephemeral deck, and I can see how many cards I'm short now and it's not even close.  That said: its somewhat apples and oranges.  Whereas in HS it is EXTREMELY painful when you're fielding weak decks, I've been perfectly happy playing the starter decks in LoR so far.  Granted, that might change as the meta matures and other players unlock more cards, but it seems fine now.  Also: I HAVE been gaining cards, they just weren't the ones I originally wanted--and unlike in HS, there aren't a lot of "pack filler"; the cards are consequential I just haven't figured out what to do with them yet.  Finally: whereas HS gives most rewards for constructed play, LoR gives most rewards for draft play, so you don't get that "feed the beast" loop of being stuck at low ladder because your decks are weak, but your decks are weak because you're stuck at low ladder.  Success in LoR just doesn't seem to depend on the size of your collection like it does in HS.

Long story short: if you're happy with HS it probably won't replace HS, but if you're looking for something in addition to spend your time gaming I'd say this is at least worth checking out.  What do you have to lose?
