I think it took most people by surprise. Basically if you want to try and apply logic, you declare an attack, your opponent declares blockers, your units turn away from the Nexus to attack the blockers, the spell that removed them happens within mere seconds of the fight starting, your attacker runs at the blocker instead of the Nexus and swings their attack at their dissipating body...

this is a step by step battle. once one step has been declared its written in stone. so a declared blocker will prevent the attacker from reaching the nexus. the spell removing the unit happens after this has been declared so it cannot go back the enemy unit is unable to reach the nexus despite the fact the blocker has been removed.

I certainly disagree with calling it "retarded." I wasn't taken aback by this at all since it basically works the same in Magic: The Gathering, (although I'm not a big Magic player by any stretch). I embrace this mechanic as a way to keep the overall power of removal cards in check.

Given the provocative language and relatively new account, I'm entirely unconvinced that this isn't just a bait-thread. But for the sake of argument, I'd note that the mechanic is entirely intuitive once you understand and accept the premise. It also ensures that Overwhelm is appropriately powerful - it'd be a lot less impactful as a keyword if the same effect could be reproduced by basically any targeted removal spell.

Lol I figured this one out within a few games, so from that point on, whenever someone declares a kill spell at the same time as their attack, I like to teach my opponent this mechanic by blocking their strongest unit with the blocker that has been targeted for kill, therefore not taking the damage by only sacrificing my unit that was gonna die at the end of combat resolution anyway.

It also give you a level of complexity: if you start a round with a Mystic Shot, a 4/3 on board, and the attack token, and all I have on board is a 1/1: do you open attack and force the chump-block, or do you shoot the 1/1 and pass?  It's a simple question, but the "best" answer will depend on what additional threats I can play on my turn, what additional threats you can play into your attack if you don't open attack, how much health we both have, etc.  What if I my unit is 3/2 instead of a 1/1?  What if you instead have a 7/7?  Does your unit have first strike, overwhelm, or regen?  And that's all assuming you're playing the Mystic Shot this turn--you might want to save it for a bigger threat, or rather spend that mana on something else this turn.  There's a whole lot of nuance behind your decision whether or not to open attack that would be lost if Mystic Shot was a burst spell.

it's NOT COMPLEXITY...it's just convoluted counterintuitive retardness...it actually makes the step by step battle system (a BRILLIANT MECHANIC BTW-and something I have been waiting for a long time in a cardgame) completly redundant...

I realy can't undestand how complacent and jaded people can be...to support this...and I am enraged that this utter idiocy ruins a game that is otherwise PERFECT!

SPEAKING of Overwhelm, it's worth noting that if a blocker is removed against an unit with Overwhelm, you're going to take full damage from the Overwhelm dude.

Not sure how many people already knew this, but I didn't see it pointed out, so...

    I advise some fact-checking:

    Quote From MTG Rules
509.1h An attacking creature with one or more creatures declared as blockers for it becomes a blocked creature; one with no creatures declared as blockers for it becomes an unblocked creature. This remains unchanged until the creature is removed from combat, an effect says that it becomes blocked or unblocked, or the combat phase ends, whichever comes first. A creature remains blocked even if all the creatures blocking it are removed from combat.

    You're welcome.

    Actually . . .

Once a creature is blocked in MTG it stays blocked even if the blocker is removed.

This thread puts a smile on my face :)

Today I learnt I've been playing MTG wrong this whole time, and the actual ruling makes me happy (:

Also salty guy gets countered by research, that always puts a smile on my face.  But seriously it's not that big of a deal, even if this rule does somehow come as a surprise to you.  Just learn the rule and learn to play around it and not just hyper aggro 100% of the time.  You stopped your attacking unit from taking damage at the very least.  And if you lost a game from it, so what?  That's how we as a species learn: fire = hot, don't touch again.
