Wizards has announced a new product this evening - Jumpstart! Here's everything we know so far.

Yes, the set shares the same name as an existing mechanic in the game. Talk about fun in conversation!

What is Jumpstart - A New Magic the Gathering Set?

"The best parts of Constructed and Limited [fused] into a dynamic, innovative play experience."

  • A new booster product that lets you quickly play fresh decks without needing to go through a long draft process.
  • Each booster contains 20 cards and has a different theme to it.
  • You'll combine two boosters to create one deck to play.
  • Opening a booster presents you with another sealed packed, fronted with the theme and mana symbol(s) for that booster.
  • The different themes each have different lists of cards. You cannot tell which list of cards you have until you open the second wrapper.
  • You'll find 46 different booster themes. Unicorn, Goblin, Spooky, Phyrexian, Cat, Garruk, Pirate, and Doctor have all been announced so far.
  • There are 121 total lists of cards. Some themes only have 1 list, others multiple.
  • There are new basic lands being added that are themed around the booster themes.
Booster Specifics
  • 1 of the lands in each booster will match the theme of that booster.
  • There are 7-8 lands present in each booster depending on the theme/list.
  • One in three boosters contain an extra rare card.
  • You will mostly find singleton cards in each booster though some lists were designed with multiples.
  • No tokens are present in the boosters. Some cards still may require them.
  • There are no foil cards. It was complicated enough to put together.
  • The product is only available in English.

When Does Jumpstart Release? Is there a Pre-Release Event for Jumpstart?

  • A pre-release will take place June 20-21.
  • The set itself launches on July 3.

Card Breakdown in Jumpstart

There are over 550 cards inside of Jumpstart boosters with many being reprints.

  • 37 cards will be new and only appearing in Jumpstart.
  • Over 120 cards come from the upcoming M21 set. They feature the M21 set symbol.
  • Over 400 cards come from sets prior to M21 - some currently Standard and others not. They feature the Jumpstart set symbol.

Set Symbols in Jumpstart and Legality

There are two different set symbols you'll find within Jumpstart boosters.

  • M21 - Legal in all formats where M21 is considered legal.
  • Jumpstart - These have Commander/Eternal legality. Not legal in Standard, Modern, or Pioneer.

Will Jumpstart be Available in Magic Arena?

Yes. Although they don't have much to talk about, it has been confirmed Jumpstart is coming to Magic Arena.

  • The format may be slightly different since it isn't a printed product.
  • The Arena release may not arrive with the paper release.
  • Jumpstart cards will be legal in Historic. This somewhat confirms we'll be buying card packs for the format and keeping what we open.

Will Jumpstart be Available in Magic Online?

No. There are no current plans to release Jumpstart on Magic Online.
