Poor Sports and Being the Better Person

Submitted 3 years, 9 months ago by

So I had a "wonderful" engagement this morning when I was doing my daily quest.  I was playing a Galakrond Priest deck to get my Inspiring quest done and I played against a Highlander Mage deck.  Honestly, it was a pretty close match the whole time and we both went to fatigue but I had one last Mass Resurrection that I held onto for after The Amazing Reno and lucked out with a couple of Khartut Defenders and Archmage Vargoth. My opponent conceded immediately after that.

Next, like a true "nice" person they send me a friend request.  I figured that they were going to try and harass me like a 12 year old losing at Super Smash Brothers, but I figured I needed the laugh.  I... was... right.  I accept the request and get a message saying, "I hope you die of cancer from your aids deck" and followed up by another statement not worth repeating.  To which I only replied, "sad face".

I used to get irritated when people acted so childish, but now especially after that match being so close, I just like to laugh at them since I got the win.

I'm curious to hear how other people deal with those situations?  I have a hard time turning down the opportunity to troll someone that is a poor sport, so I take time out of my day to do it.  I'll admit, once there was someone that added me after beating them and actually complimented me on my deck and play and said that they were going to make a deck like it and try.  But mostly, it's just salty little people.  I'm looking forward to hearing what other people have said when the poor sports lose.

Personally, I often add people after what I felt was a great match (win or lose) because I want to say GG! People rarely accept, obviously because of what you describe above (yeah, I've been flamed a bunch of times). When they do accept, sometimes we both just say GG, but other times, we have a really great conversation about the match or the game in general. Then I have more dudes on my friends list who might share an 80 gold challenge with me, or whom I can spectate for that quest. Heck, sometimes I just spectate a friend to see what other people are playing!

I wish more people would use this feature positively, so that you're not cringing when you see that "A recent opponent would like to be your friend!" Yeah, usually they're not looking to be your friend. But hey, sometimes they are!

I never accept the request immediately, because these BM get their negative satisfaction from the bare utterance, independently of your reaction (some remove friendship before you can reply).

So I deny them that permission.

I can never laugh from such a behavior anyway.

BUT I add them in my next session, hours later, just in case they are actually smart people (I periodically clean my list from inactives).

I always play home-brew, off-meta decks so friend requests come much more frequently from people genuinely curious about what I was playing than from salty kids. Because of that I always accept friend requests expecting a decent, friendly conversation to come out of it.

On the flip side, the occasional salt-driven friend requests are amusingly perplexing, and I always respond as politely as possible as I try to find out what exactly their problem was. Often they unfriend me before I can quiz them on it though, which is a shame.

Here's something I have found works particularly well for getting genuine friend requests: play a full golden 30 legendary deck. It's jolly expensive but it pays for itself in friendship...

I do this too - delay the acceptance until the potential troll has cooled down.

I also occasionally add an opponent to say GG or to give them praise for using a creative deck that I've never seen before on ladder. I am not a deck creator type, so all of my decks are net decks or community creations.

I usually accept when I win and people send me a friend request. Either they are friendly and want to say GG and chat about the game, or they are salty and want to flame me. If they are salty, then I just chuckle a little, unfriend them, and then move on. Sometimes though it surprises me how salty some people can get. One time I was playing a long control game and my opponent had lethal, but before killing me he kept on dragging the minion around the board and emoting. At the end of the game I sent him a friend request, he didn't respond for about 10 minutes, then he said "EZ GAME" and unfriended me. Another time a friend of mine was playing Handlock v Handlock and it was a pretty good game. At the end he sent him a friend request to say GG and complement him on his Handlock deck. His opponent accepted only to say "loser" and then unfriend him.

The saltiness of people never ceases to amaze me.  People are just ego tripping when they win or they blame everything under the stars when they lose.

Brings back memories about the first time I got this myself. It was one of those priest vs token druid games. First time round he beat me with Potion of Madness, I conceded and moved on. Then for some reason the very next game was against the same dude. I played around potion of madness hard and he eventually lost. He sent me a friend request, told me where to go, then unfriended almost as fast.

Must take a very specific kind of human being to send a friend request just to scream vulgarities. After a while it just got funny to be honest.

But hey, there are genuinely players out there that actually recognize a competitive game for what it is and pat the other side on the back with a healthy gg. And it is for these guys that I just can't refuse friend requests, even if I get flamed more often than not.

To all the people saying that they wait to accept the request until later: yeah, I guess that diffuses the hate a little, and I'm not at all saying you shouldn't do it that way. But from my perspective, since I want to chat about a good game, when I see the person accepted my request a day or 2 later, I don't even remember what the game was like. If you want to be able to have those fun post-game chats, you need to accept sooner. To each his own, though.

Also worth noting: you should never take the flame seriously. How stupid and pathetic are those people that say things like "get cancer" and stuff. The lack of maturity and common sense is laughable. Brush it off and move on, they're not worth your time.

Usually, when my opponent is about to kill me but then ropes me the whole turn and starts emoting I get less salty. I just laugh at them and emote back

I always love a good laugh, I got a mate whom I share rage add stories with. I like to either play dumb or just make fun of them and when they delete me again I report them

Oh, Man, I'll never forget my first Friend Request: „l2p noob, go fuck yourself, stupid rng cancer".

I always accept Requests immediately. Could it be a friendly Person? Or some salty Whiner? Who knows! That's what makes it always so exciting.

It's also quite fun if the Rage Messages get creative, or if they're in a different Language so you have to use Translator to find out what they actually say.

Hey, we should prepare a set of answers for this kind of people!

"Get a life" or "Learn to play" are a bit too obvious. Maybe "Praise Galakrond" or "Die Insect" would be funnier xD

    The pleasure is mine.

My last standard decks: nothing special right now.

I added 200 people across NA. EU and Wild last year.  I think I had one negative response.

That vast majority were nice and I've had some really good chats with people all over the world.  This was mainly wild should that be at all relevant.

In the rare cases when someone childishly acts as the person in OPs post, I deny them a negative reaction.  It's what they want.  In the past I've just chuckled and sent them a *hug*.  I think that probably annoys them more :P

People that start wishing death/disease on you/your family because they lost in a fantasy card game have enough of a hard time already.  After all, they have to *be* them for life.

    All generalizations are false.

I used to insult back those who add me just to flame me. One time this guy added me after I beat him with an Odd Warrior I think, he called me a f*g, then I told him it takes one to know one, then I just chuckled as he kept hurling insults at me. Not very mature, I know, but I've since just stopped adding those who send me a request after I beat them rather luckily.

I often wonder what makes the better person. If you're creative on either end of the encounter maybe that is the true better person?

So, I took the time awhile back to make a little parody for flamers who add me. Looked up the lyrics for "Single Ladies" and made a parody off of it with roughly 95% original lyrics (yay!), just so that I could give myself a little personal challenge to see who, if any, flamers would stay friended to me long enough as I copy & pasted each line of my parody to them as they tried to insult me. Turns out I've actually accomplished this twice now.

First time was from this person who responded with some funny wtfs and many more stfus, but they did choose to stay friends for the whole encounter. Very interesting and a bit funny. Second person was a lot more recent than the first, said it was very cringe, but also did choose to stay for the whole thing before I unfriended.

Letter the better person (creative person) games begin I suppose!

Personally I just /ignore the friend requests, because they usually come when I win and I suspect people just want to complain about their losses. I'm not interested in listening to insults, as I prefer to concentrate on the next game and to have fun.

I honestly don't remember the very last time I accepted a friend request from a stranger, but I do remember that one time, when I played Elemental Reno Mage and got matched with a salty Beast Hunter. That game took place two years ago in the lower wild ranks. I don't remember much of it beside having good RNG and a Reno in a clutch situation. After I beat my opponent, they sent me a friend request. I dunno why I accepted it, but soon after I regretted doing so. Insults started coming in, some were directed to me, others to my family. While I didn't take those personally, I thought I could do the right thing and report that player. The guy went afk, while I was trying to figure out the report function, then I saw them having changed their name and the insults continued. This time around the dude became even more creative and used punctuation marks to express their feelings towards me. I will let you figure out on your own what those signs resembled, but just know that the dude didn't stop spamming me, untill I informed them of what I was doing. Only then did they decide to unfriend me.

Another example of why I don't add randoms: The following occurred way back in MSoG, when Pirate Warrior was a popular deck in Standard. The opponent had a big wide board, which threatened lethal. I (Renolock) coined out Reno on turn 5 and passed. On the very next turn the opponent played a charger and killed me from 30. When this happened, the warrior constantly sent me friend requests. I didn't accept any of those, as I suspected the person would only gloat over their victory, but the strange thing was how that person kept sending them long after the match. It must have been one hell of a speech they wanted to give and I denied them of this opportunity.

I often accept and let them rant because why not?  If they are so frustrated playing a game that they need to act like that perhaps it'll be good for them to vent some.

Around the Kobolds release I tried Big Priest in Wild to try and see the appeal and learn the deck.  In my first game playing the deck I lost and my opponent added me after beating.  I accepted out of curiosity as to why the add.  It was to insult me for playing Big Priest.  But it started very passive aggressive like "I'm curious, why do you and everyone else play such a brain dead deck?"  I told him it was my first game with it and I wanted to see how it plays (which was true) and he continued to insult me more.  Don't remember what was said exactly, but there was enough hate speech in it that I for the first time, and so far only time, I felt compelled to screenshot the conversation and report it to Blizzard.

No idea what came of it, but I remember thinking "How sad must this poor guy's life be to flame on someone after WINNING against them?!"  So while annoying, the encounter actually shaped my "accept and let them vent" policy.  I usually just respond to everything they say with "GG!"  If they say really hateful angry things I might add "Hit me up if you ever get the 80g quest."  Being nice to them and trying to actually be their friend for some reason just seems to make them more angry though...

My favorite is when you accept and get one quick angry message, and then before you can even type back "GG" they are no longer on your friend list.  Or this one time someone added me, and for some reason right after the add I got a notification that they opened a golden legendary and before they could say anything I was like "Gratz on the legendary!"  He got confused and it derailed his anger.

Quick!  Someone give me something clever to write here.

Hey, don't know if this fits here, but I added this guy Yesterday and today he got... weird? Angry? Idk

He told me to go f myself, said that the game is bad because of me, insulted my family... got disgustingly sexual about beheaded Women, called me Jaina and confessed his Love to me... and than asked what's a good Priest Deck against „Cybo-Lock" in Wild.

Got pretty wild. If I'd knew how to post Screenshots, I'd share some of the Stuff that the Guy hurled at me.

By letting them vent their frustration that way you are "teaching" them that such a behavior is a good one.

While it is neither acceptable, nor good for them, because such a form of negativity has a deep root, and bare venting is a fake solution: they think they feel better after venting, but they do not actually. The source of their frustration is still there.

    That's kind of epic

I've not experienced too many of the gloaters, but when I get them I have the hardest time resisting a troll

That was something that I never thought I would have needed in my life.

That is quite possibly the strangest thing I could have thought to read about on this forum...

Depends on how you want to look at it.  The person expressing their frustration about the situation may just be having a bad day.  Then on the other, and more likely, hand they are just a poor sport and want to blame everything under the sun for them not winning and berate the person that beat them.

What's to doubt?  That my graveyard got filled with Khartut Defenders, or that I lucked out with that playing my own spin on Gala Priest?
