Help! I need a lore-yer

Greetings, fellow custom card design enthusiasts! In a fit of overconfidence I decided to try and create my own custom Hearthstone expansion. The good news: I have a cool idea for a new keyword and a very flavorful special kind of card I'll make a legendary of for each class. The bad news: I have never really played WoW and am struggling to tie in the expansion lore-wise. While I'm perfectly able to look up specific stuff on wowpedia and the likes, I need a pointer in a more general direction with this. That's where you might help out:

    Help! I need a lore-yer

Maybe there's someone among you who could give me a nudge in the right direction. What I'm looking for is some kind of race. I already found out that there's one at the Dark Moon Faire and that's my somewhat clunky working title for now: "The Great Darkmoon Faire Race". I'm not convinced this is an important enough event to make an expansion of though. So is there anything else in WoW in that direction? It doesn't have to be a literal race Formula 1 style, I could imagine something like an artifact being dicovered and everybody racing there to get their hands on it first as well. I'd be grateful for any kind of support!

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

In pre-Cataclysm, there used to be a race in the Shimmering Flats of Thousand Needles, between Goblins and Gnomes. A vehicle race, including rockets ofc.

Although I don't remember it being particularly flavourful or important...

With the Cataclysm the area got submerged.

    Hey anchorm4n!

Darkmoon Faire itself is enough for an expansion (and probably the last expansion of this year), but yeah the race itself probably not expansion worthy.

There's the Serpent Riders/Order of the cloud Serpent and the Sky Race in Pandaria. It's the faction you had to get rep with in order to ride the cloud serpent mounts.

Might make for a cool expansion with Pandaren and Dragons.

I can't think of any other races off the top of my head. If I think of any others I'll let you know.

Thanks to both of you! The Sky Race looks like a nice idea. It's probably easier to find art for it than for the Darkmoon Faire, so this is great advice! Now I'm even more excited, this looks like the last piece I was missing :-)

Moved to the HS/Lore forum. And pinged our resident lore-yer, Goliath, he might be able to help you ;-)

In post-cataclysm Azshara there is a Goblin rocket track that covers almost the entire zone.
They have the comedic tendency to go off track.

    Let me light the way.

I would go with the Shimmering Flats/Mirage Raceway in the Thousand Needles. You can have fun goblin and gnome karts (and other races), plus general Thousand Needle stuff like tauren and centaur that haven't been explored too much in Hearthstone yet.

Azshara Raceway has the problem of being too similar to GvG (there's not much distinguishing Azshara from other zones other than 'goblins live there') and Darkmoon Faire is probably going to be the third expansion this year.

The Pandaria one works too, but... I just like the Thousand Needles more.

A man is lying on the street, some punks chopped off his head

I'm the only one who stops to see if he's dead.

    Hmm. Turns out he's dead.

Hi everyone! Fear not, your Lor-yer is here, lol. I'm happy to help out. Of the ideas listed so far, I really like the the Cloud Serpent race concept and agree that it might be a good idea to stay away from the Darkmoon Fair for the simple reason that an actual card set looks likely to be released this year, if the predictions are true. I know of a few other possibilities that you may want to consider as well if your looking for a different flavor.

The first idea is one already mentioned by RavenSunHS known as the Mirage Raceway. This was a contest between goblins and gnomes to test their engineering, and would fit as a race theme, but could likely come too close to overlapping with the actual Goblins vs  Gnomes card set already in the game. https://wow.gamepedia.com/Mirage_Raceway

Another possible idea could be the Norwington Estate  located in Kul Tiras, which hosts a festival centered around hunting and horsemenship, which might give you something to work with if you wanted to focus on horses for racing. https://wow.gamepedia.com/Norwington_Estate

A third idea I have is the Running of the Gnomes, which began as a community event supporting the fight against Breast Cancer, but is now an official part of the lore where gnomes, and other races as well sometimes, run a marathon from Dun Morogh to Booty Bay to remind themselves of the great things they can accomplish in spite of their size.

I'm honestly surprised, looking through the lore, to find that there aren't many races to choose from. Personally, I still like the cloud serpent idea, since it's the most unique and has more room for variety without stepping on the toes of existing sets, but I hope this can give you some idea. Let me know if you need other fuel and I'll see what I can dig up as material you could at least loosely tie into a race theme.

Thanks a lot for your advice! I decided to go with the Cloud Serpent race, since it fits very well what I already had in mind (which I didn't tell you about because I don't want to spill the beans yet). I hope I'll manage to find the balance between touching several subjects in a flavorful way (Dragons, Pandaren, the race itself) without the expansion being all over the place without a central theme. For the records: I had come up with the Darkmoon Faire race before having read Flux's speculation article ;-) But you're right, my focal point is the race and the Cloud Serpent theme is way better for this than the Darkmoon Faire. So yeah, you gave me a huge boost and prevented my custom expansion from being a failure before it has even begun to take shape. Thank you!

No problem :) I look forward to seeing it. You did good in wanting to carefully consider the theme before getting started. Much like how  a house needs a strong foundation, and a movie needs to start with a good script, a Hearthstone card set-- whether official or fan-made-- needs to start with a solid theme to be successful overall, at least in my opinion. There's a good amount of pandaria fan art on the web, so hopefully you shouldn't have any trouble finding good visual card materials.
