New auto trans is very expensive. Not worth it. Install manual instead. Car needs to be scanned by vagcom in electrical section. 2.0l is a solid engine that should last a long time if taken care of.

How much would installing a manual cost?! Thanks for your reply! You rule!

I have a '99 VW GTI GLS (2.0 L engine) with 180,000 miles. I'm located in Southern California Questions:
- How much longer will my car survive in that repair costs will be less than the price of a new VW?
- How much would a new automatic transmission cost (parts & labor)?
- My windows will automatically roll down in the following scenarios: -- I double tap the key fob to unlock both doors -- The passenger side door opens before I turn off my engine What's going on? I suspect getting my stereo stolen is related
