Cutlass Doom Rogue - 55%WR R4

Hi everyone!

I've had so much fun with this deck. I've always wanted to play cutlass rogue since that meta where it was super strong (forget which one). I finally opened a cutlass, and recently bit the bullet and crafted Tess - knowing full well I had more sensible craft options with not much time left to use her before rotation haha.

The deck is fun because it's so adaptable, and you constantly have to make decisions based on the deck you're playing against and the situation. I suspect that in better hands this deck can do much better in terms of WR.

I was quite surprised when I actually looked at my stats:

55.3% WR (21-17) since doom event

(unfortunately arcane tracker on my mobile doesn't let me differentiate games since the doom event, so I haven't included those numbers)

Haven't done this before, but if anyone has questions or wants my insight/rough guide I'd be happy to oblige!

For starters:

Mulligan - Keep the weapon (basically always) unless you have raiding party

  - Keep Fan of Knives against shaman

  - Keep the removal tools when facing tempo/aggro decks

Zephrys is the only common (potential) weapon removal, so when playing a highlander deck, try to delay playing the weapon until after zeph. Most games anyway start off in tempo Rogue style, and you can usually judge when the best time to play it is.

Scheme is there for fatigue games. In those games you want to hit Tess, so be careful with burgled cards not to play stuff that can kill your Tess. Against aggressive decks that doesn't matter as much. Other good targets are Greenskin or hench clan burglar if Tess fails.

Nice. I play the same but drop both hucksters for shaku and a scheme

I fear Zephrys is too big a problem here. It provides weapon destruction and can destroy your win condition.

I know this very well from the wild meta where I am quite successful with my spectral burgle rogue.

Without the weapon the tempo burgle package doesn't provide enough punch to compete with other decks in wild and standard meta.

      Thanks for the comment :)

I've actually had a different experience in standard and find the tempo package in the deck to be quite strong. And Zephrys is not as common as you say.. Again, often being played before your weapon or without giving them removal if you have a good board. I've managed at least a positive WR and I think I've misplayed a lot.

I'd love to know if you've played around with the deck in standard and if you have any specific suggestions? I've also started playing a wild version so would love to see your deck if you've shared it.

This is the deck I use for wild. To be fair, I got it from someone at hearthpwn.  Recently I cut hucksters in favor of a toggwaggles scheme and a pharaoh cat.

It performs very well, even against secret mage and other top tier decks if piloted wisely.

My point with zephrys is, since rogue doesn't have access to strong board clears even against control decks in wild you need the upgraded weapon up asap for pressure and survivability.

Thus anyone with zephrys can anticipate very early how to disrupt your win condition.

If unanswered, the weapon can grow insanely strong.

But I like your list and haven't tried it yet. So I'll head into the new season with it and come back with a feedback.

I feel that, considering the popularity of zephrys, it would be recommended to either run the quest or a second cutlass as a fallback plan. Otherwise you are basing your entire gameplan on a single card that you not only have to draw but also keep alive.

Also, I think with the amount of burgle effects, The cutlass lacks sustain. Academic Espionage should help with that in the lategame.

Having a second cutlass is fair, but the tempo package actually wins most games. I usually try to wait for after they've played zeph to equip the weapon, but surprisingly he often doesn't give weapon removal if you have a decent board.

Regarding sustain, I've never run out of burgled cards to keep the weapon alive. For fatigue games you can usually coordinate infinite Tess which feels really good when it happens.

That's true, Infinite Tesses can do the trick. My view might by subjective here, having played Cutlass Rogue in wild since Witchwood where my main objective was to grow the cutlass to a point it was ridiculous. Weapon destruction was a huge issue for that.

I love the Cutlass, made some 300wins in wild with it, and like to try in in standard. But I neither own Captain Greenskin nor Edwin. What are good alternatives? Did you test any of the following cards?

Academic espionage- because I don't care about winrate? And a second cutlass?

A pirate-or attack synergy, like the  growing 3/3, or the combo-pirate that buffs your weapon?

Maybe Shadowstep&Evil Miscreant for more options?

Shadowstep is a good addition. I love espionage but there isn't a good enough draw engine after you've played it imo. The combo pirate would be a great fit too, but haven't tried it myself

I ran a list very similar to this before SoU (also without Greenskin) and found that good option was Cutthroat Buccaneer. It also buffs the weapon attack while being tutorable from Raiding Party

I am surprised you are not using the quest with this deck.  Seems like it would fit in really easily.

It's a slightly different take on quest Rogue. It concentrates on buffing the lifesteal weapon which helps you stabilise in the mid game and then get excellent value from your burgled cards.

If weapon destruction becomes more prominent, I don't think it would do as well (you'd probably put in a second weapon) but for now you mostly just need to avoid Zephrys.

My bad.  I didnt see the spectral dagger in the list.

Not really - the point of this specific build (which is basically the same Burgle Rogue that existed before SoU with the new relevant cards added) is to buff the Spectral Cutlasses. If you have the quest, you're using your new hero power to generate weapons and thus destroy the cutlasses, which totally defeats the purpose.
