What is Can't Block in Legends of Runeterra?

Legends of Runeterra has many card effects that are common enough that they get their own keyword - a word or two that immediately tells you how the card works. Let's take a look at the Can't Block keyword.


This unit cannot block.


Can't Block is about as clear of a keyword as you can get. Can't Block means that, well... the unit can't block. What you see is what you get. Can't Block is a bit of a weird keyword, as its only effect is strictly negative. There are no positive ways to take advantage of this effect.

As the effect is a drawback, units that have this effect usually have higher stats to make up for this effect.

Can't Block does not prevent a unit from being forced to block by a unit with Challenger.


Keywords that Work Great with Can't Block

As Can't Block is a negative effect with no positive to speak of, there is no effect in the game that positively synergizes with it. That said, putting pretty much any keyword on a unit with Can't Block will make it better.


Playing Against Can't Block in Legends of Runeterra

Playing against units with Can't Block is quite easy during your attack step since they represent no threat to your board, and can be completely ignored when planning your attack strategy.

Against units with Can't Block during your opponent's attack step however can make things harder since they provide higher average stats for the cost. In general, just making favorable trades will get the job done.

As the only cards in the game with the keyword are simply just units who can't block, this will cover the most notable examples of cards with said keyword, as well as very basic uses of the keyword.

Legion Rearguard is a very basic card that utilizes the mechanic, as it's simply a 1 mana 3|2 that Can't Block. 3|2 for 1 mana is quite strong given that its only effect is a drawback, but later in the game, that effect can do quite a bit of harm due to the fact that... it can't block.

Cursed Keeper is an interesting application of the keyword. Cursed Keeper is a small unit, but it summons a 4|4 unit which is pretty large for 2 mana. The fact that it can't block means you simply can't trade it away to summon the 4|4. Instead, it requires your opponent to block it, or for it to be killed in another way. Cards like Chronicler of Ruin can allow you to kill the Cursed Keeper, summoning the 4|4 with minimal effect, and get another [Hearthstone Card (Cursed Keeper) Not Found] on the board, which in turn, can summon another 4|4.

The Undying is a card with a little bit of infamy due to its infinite nature. Each time it dies, it will resummon itself growing in size. The fact that it can't block just makes it difficult to do that yourself, but eventually, your opponent will need to do something about it. And if they do, it will just keep coming back and keep growing.

Trifarian Gloryseeker has an impressive 5 Attack for 2 mana, although the 1 Health is rather pithy. It has Challenger though, which will allow you to take advantage of that 5 Attack and ram it into something larger and kill it.
