Well, you can somehow manipulate Blackthorn pool by not including low Cost Deathrattles - sure stuff like Razorboar is not bad, but it really depends on what you're looking for.
The thing is, you can't really put only 5 and 4 mana deathreattle cards in your deck, otherwise, if you draw them before Blackthorn, the card would be totally useless.

It's a legendary card, so not really. By turn 7, the enemy board would probably be full too and by turn 8, it will probably be countered by druid's guardian animals, Mage's flamestrike, Priest's soul mirror, Warlock's Twisting Nether and so on.

I meant how did people know that they needed to play "x class", in "x mode" with "x cards" in "x order".

A small change to Death Speaker Blackthorn to make it a better card : summon deathrattle minions from the highest (5 mana) to the lowest one.
Right now, he summons randomly between 5 and 1 mana.
Deck Of lunacy is even more busted here, the brawl summon minions with the original spell costs.
