Monk should have been the new class

Submitted 4 years ago by

Now, this is my personal opinion, but personally I think monks should have been the new class. They're fat, lazy, drunk pandas pretty much the opposite of demon hunter. They could have been more control-oriented requiring chi and stuff, heck they could have still added outcast and called it feng shui or something. We have several important monks from WoW and lots more lore characters for a Pandaria Expac we already have Lei Shen as a hero. Lili could be a legendary and Chen could be the hero.

Monks have several playstyles in wow being drunk and staggering off damage to take it later, flinging mist to heal, and doing cool wind weaving stuff. They also have their statues that could act like shrines or something. THEY CAN LITERALLY SPLIT THEIR BODY APART INTO ELEMENTAL FORMS!

TL:DR I think monk should have been the class instead of Demon hunter since it would probably be more on the control side and easier to balance/play against, but its early maybe DH will get fixed real soon.

Any opinions and or hate is welcome and valid

I agree with you, mostly because monks feel like they’re a lot more diverse than demon hunters. My worry is that all the Demon Hunter cards will end up looking the exact same- either night elves with green tattoos or random demons. With Monk, you can have different factions and races with unique looks that can fit in with the themes of any expansion. Demon Hunters, on the other hand, all look the same, so either the art and flavor will become bland and repetitive, or Blizzard will have to break the lore and create cards like Furious Felfin

Honestly, it seems like “Demon Hunter” could be a subset of another class like Hunter or Warlock, rather than its own distinct class.

Why not both? Maybe after Demon Hunter is done securing the next 10 years of Hearthstone, we have Monks swoop in. I would prefer Monks over Death Knights (despite playing a Death Knight in WoW for years), just because they hit such a cool fantasy.

In the IGN video covering Demon Hunter's development, they talked about a scrapped mechanic called Fury. It was a secondary resource Demon Hunters built, and spent it to play certain cards. It was eventually dropped, but I would love to see something like that come back for Monks. Call it Chi, and suddenly it's related to a mechanic from WoW.

    Hmm. Turns out he's dead.

Feels like integrating a fast, aggressive class makes sense as your first addition. Ppl will play it more, so you will get more data and it will probably be easier to design cards for it and see how it goes.

Making a complex control oriented class could be too cumbersome as a first addition.

Fast and flashy, that is the name of the game for masses usually. If the concept holds, then you can built upon that imho.

It is way too early for me to decide how I feel about Demon Hunters, but so far they don't seem to be all that I hoped they would be. Really, they aren't as interesting to play as I thought, and I also don't like playing against them all that much either. I feel like there are so many more unique things you could have done with a monk to make them feel different. Demon Hunters have Demons, that is 90% of their identity. Monks have martial arts, chi, pandas (new tribe?), and a bunch of other stuff that feels different from the other classes. It is not that Demon Hunters don't have a strong theme, but I think that Monks could have had a more unique theme.

Except that goes against everything lore wise with Demon Hunters.

I do not dislike DH as a class, however I do really like your idea on how Monk would function. Team 5 stated that other new classes are a possibility so maybe next year?

The effects of cards are developed independent of the theme. Even if demon hunters are replaced with monk, theres no guarantee that the card effects would change. After all, warriors are currently the control class in hearthstone. Like, the term 'warrior' doesnt exactly spell tank.

Besides which, we can more or less deduce that the plan was to make dhunters OP so it'll generate more interest, so we can assume the same for any new class to follow. I much rather have an OP aggro class than a control one. Those wasted hours of inevitability versus res priest is more than enough as reference.

I'd love to see new classes every now and then, but to be perfectly honest, I dont think we'll be seeing one for the next few years.

Agreed Monk would have been vastly cooler, more well designed and balanced.

Monks are cool as hell and do martial arts, demon hunters are lame and emo.  pandaria is beautiful and mystical.  the outlands are a dump

A Monk class would have been awesome. Would have been about 1 million times more welcome then the BS Demon Hunter.

I feel like people are focusing a little too much on the balance aspect here. This makes sense, given how demon hunters have been terrorizing ladder so far, but just because a different class with a different playstyle could have been introduced instead doesn't guarantee that that wouldn't have been a broken mess as well.

For all we know they could've pushed a slow control-oriented class and we'd end up with the Dr. Boom, Mad Genius control warrior 2.0 meta instead. Does anyone remember that one? I do, unfortunately.

That was a terrible and boring meta.
