I think that when Dean talks about gold/dust not being fun, he is looking at it from the perspective of your "casual" hearthstone player, that doesn't comment here or keep up with the current meta. I would imagine that with HS being on phone, there is a ton of players just playing whatever cards they have while trying to do their quests.
I am pretty sure they have solid metrics about the player base and they try to tailor the experience towards the majority. I personally like option to craft my cards, because deck building and trying new ideas is to me sometimes more fun than actually playing, but I understand his perspective. I hope they will find some middle-ground so both sides will be happy.
