New Player Seeking Guidance

Submitted 4 years, 2 months ago by

Hi all, I'm a multiple-time Legend player in Hearthstone, just started playing LoR. I'm free to play. So far I have been enjoying it by trying to build decks with my small collection myself and sniping a few wins over more complete decks on low ladder. Though I have a really hard time deciding which cards and how many copies to include in my decks.

If anyone has similar HS background but have been in LoR for a longer, any general advice on how you have approached this game? E.g., which beginning Champions do you think are good (and fun)? I liked Braum and Jinx the most. Lux feels really weak. Any advice on how to build up your collection? Any cards to craft? What about expedition? I averaged 7 wins in Hearthstone Arena and that's where I started to build up my collection in HS. So I'm really interested in trying expedition, but any advice is welcome.

Cheers!

    Welcome to Runeterra!

Expedition is definitely worth your time as you will get a guaranteed Champion alongside all the xp. Bad drafts feel less awful when you have a second trial for a better result.

    My advice in random order:

    • As you may have noticed, your main card sources are the weekly chest and the region rewards. You want to hit (at least) lvl 10 vault every week for a free expedition token so don't forget to do your dailies.
    • Try to figure out the region which has the tools you need for the decks you want to try, and go change that as your region which gets your xp. If you have no preferences, grind them all to lvl 8 to get a champion capsule from each of them.
    • I would hold back crafting cards as you will get plenty of them from various sources; only do that if you reaaally want something for a specific deck.
    • Zed is a strong starter champion and Tryndamere a great finisher but I liked Garen the most (they are all starters right? I'm starting to lose count what the initial ones were...)

I'll try to pop by in this thread if I remember something else that I think could be helpful.

EDIT: Another important point: You want to get (at least) three PvP wins every day for that sweet bonus xp (+400, +200, and +100, respectively) because xp is everything!

Lux is actually quite powerful specially if you pair her with Heimerdinger or Karma.

You will notice you will have much more freedom to craft whatever you want in this game, when comparing to hs you can make almost any deck you want within 2 weeks of playing.

You can also choose to make an Elise deck, spiders are very easy to build as first deck, also they are quite flexible in that you can pair them with noxus, demacia or piltover & zaun(most popular builds).

here are some decks if you want to look at it the poster/analyzer is a streamer named swim he is at master rank and seem to shape the meta quite a lot as mostly the decks he features seem to become popular.

About collection management I would recommend leveling regions in the same speed unless you really like a specific region, the multiples of 4 rewards are the most powerful for deck building and going for them will give you freedom in choosing what you want to craft.

Another important point is to actually play expeditions at least once a week when you get the token it gives a lot of exp specially if you manage to get 7 wins. and the rewards are.. at least a legendary! if blizzard ever gave a free legendary per week to their playerbase, it would be so much more playable.

    Welcome to LoR!

There's lots of things to try and learn in this game, and FrostyFeet and DoubleSummon have already given some nuggets so I'll just build upon specifically talking about champions.  The way I see it, there are 3 types of champions in this game:

    1. Those that you need to build your deck around to get value (Lux, Yasuo, Thresh, Fiora, Ashe)
    2. Those who have intrinsic value and you can slot into any deck (Braum, Zed, Anivia, Karma, Garen, Darius)
    3. Those who can go either way (Jinx, Elise, Ezreal, Teemo)

So the secret to good deck building (and I assume you're going to be homebrewing decks for a couple of weeks until you get some vaults and rewards under your belt) is understanding how each card--champions especially but this applies to all cards--is synergizing with the rest of your deck.  Don't feel like you need to spend wildcards yet to improve your first-week decks; I think you'll be much happier hobbling along for a few weeks and then making a competitive deck rather than trying to make a mediocre deck less mediocre.

Also, one bonus tip: watch streamers!  You learn so much by watching other people play.  In particular, I recommend MegaM0gwai, Saucy Mailman, and Swimstream.

Those are all GREAT advice. Thank you all for the help! I may not have time to watch streamers though (I still play Hearthstone for Battleground and occasionally other modes to clear quests)

Also note that there have been a couple of reasonably successful decks with no Champions at all. It's not easy to make such a deck, but it's possible.

expedition is fun in this. if you want to smash more noobs, play as much as possible on Tues after reset (1 free token per week so most noobs to smash on Tue).

lots of good champions, all of them are fun. check mobalytics for meta decks.

this game is more skill based than hs. it takes a while to get used to the atk / block mechanics. knowing when to atk is v. important.

also - similar to hs - look up all spells for all regions, keep an eye on their mana, and know what spells to look out for when it looks like they are setting up a bad trade, likely it won't be a bad trade (although sometimes it is the correct play to play into it anyway and hope they don't have the answer)
