Secret Burn Mage

I know there has been a little discussion some other threads, but I haven’t seen a dedicated thread about this. This isn’t a salt thread, more of a place for discussion. 

Secret Burn Mage is really out of control in wild. I feel the only way you can beat them is to get lucky that they drew horribly. 

Has anyone found a deck that consistently beats them. Teching in secret tech to every deck doesn’t help, there has to be a deck out there that is actually a hard counter to this deck.

More than half of my matches at rank 5 in wild are burn mage. It’s really getting old and I would like to start putting them in their place. I just played 5 matches, of which 4 were burn mage. 

I ended up crafting an Aluneth and playing it for a bit before I got bored. It really is insane how much damage you can do. I didn't lose much, but one deck that wrecked me was a thief priest of all things. To add, mech hunter can get really nasty depending on their mulligan. This was around rank 8 or so.

I have consistently kept a 76% wr against it, though I don't see it much anymore on ranks 1-3, playing renomage and renolock btw, both have an ooze teched in, zephyrys absolutely DESTROYS those decks, you can get a flare or two from him and mages start crying in the corner

I am not sure but I guess I have a positive win rate with thief rogue. Of course it's no hard counter and depends very much on if you get your buffed weapon online and they don't draw the nuts.

But most of the games are at least even and often you can completely wreck them which is very satisfying. 

I built a deck specifically to beat Burn Mage and so far I have a positive win-rate against it:

Warning: Yesterday I faced a lot of combo decks on rank 1 and I dropped to rank 2. I think people wanted to counter-queue the players, who counter-queued Burn Mage with Reno. I haven't made any changes to the deck in the game yet, but I'm planning on cutting 1x Excavated Evil and 2x Doomsayers for 1x Seance and 2x Deathlords.

[edit] Other decks, that beat Reno decks beat it somewhat consistently. I've seen users recommending odd warrior too.

Decks with healing and armor + tech.

Decks with outburn power + tech.

eg. not just Reno, but also Hunter with burn power + Flare.

Basically teching is useful, but insufficient on its own. You need a counterstrategy first.

I have played Burn Mage myself, and overall it is truly insanely powerful, but Wild already contains a quantity of counterstrategies, so that at the end of the day, Secret Burn can prey on the old meta, and Wild is very slow at adapting to changes (except at high ranks), but that's it. The meta will adjust and keep it in check.

Actually, my real concern is that in the effort to adjust against Burn Mage, the meta turns into a Reno fiesta of indefinitely slow games (and notice it is is increasingly easy to also include OTK in Reno decks), which many may like, but i do not honestly...

Overall, i think the game should include more efficient and cheap techs for any strategy that roots into non-board synergies (secrets, weapons, graveyard, deck composition).

The Darkness should not be the only neutral anti-Reno. (There should be a non-legendary non-extreme one, say a (4) 4/4 that throws 3x useless spells, maybe (1)-costed, so that a Reno deck can try and find a Skulking Geist, etc)

Eater of Secrets should have a cheaper brother (even without the stats buff, removing even just 1x secret with, say, a (2) 2/2 is enough).

More Hungry Dragon cards.

Etc.

The existence of minimal but efficient techs for anything would ensure that any deck has better chances to adjust to any given meta, without the constant risk of having a deck turn from top tier to nearly garbage just because one deck receives broken support.

was sure for a second it costs 3 dunno it would cost 3 probably if it was released today. there's Flare if you play hunter or zephyrys which can discover flare.

Secret Mage was meta a while ago and the new cards have just refreshed its flavor, but as always Wild will adapt even if slower than Standard. It's just a matter of time but Secret Mage will be put in check, in the meanwhile we can just tech against it even if the solution are not so efficient (except for Flare that is the concept of how tech cards should be printed).

I beat them consistet with my jade shaman. I have one Kezan Mystic and two Antique Healbot in the deck. But yes it´s like autoloose if i don´t draw a healbot.

Odd warrior. They even concede when baku animation kicks in
