Hi everyone! Having explored Highlander strategies now for Priest, Demon Hunter, Hunter, Shaman, and Warrior, it's time to take a look at Druid! This deck spotlight will be unique in that we will be exploring a deck that can effectively use its Highlander cards (Reno, Lone Ranger and Rheastrasza) even though the deck has double copies of certain cards. How? Because Druid can draw like crazy! Read on for more details!
A Non-Highlander Highlander Deck?
Sounds like a terrible idea, no? Yet this deck functions pretty consistently due to Druid's powerful Dragon synergy coupled with the ability to draw through the deck at breakneck speed.
First of all, you may notice that this version of the deck only has 5 duplicate cards. And yes, you may get stuck with one or more of those at or near the bottom of your deck, which will make it impossible to activate the Battlecry of Reno, Lone Ranger or Rheastrasza. However, with so few duplicates, the odds are in your favor. Plus, as noted above, you can draw cards using Aquatic Form (which also helps to grab duplicates from the bottom of your deck), Embrace of Nature, Frost Lotus Seedling, Take to the Skies, and Nourish. It's also worth noting that even if you aren't able to activate your Highlander cards, the deck still packs quite a punch.
Dragons? Dragons!
Druid's Dragon synergy in Standard is quite strong. Splish-Splash Whelp and Desert Nestmatron give you mana manipulation, while Dragon Tales and Take to the Skies let you generate or draw more Dragons. You also have some really impactful Legendary Dragons, most importantly: Rheastrasza. If you manage to draw all of your duplicate cards (and wait until AFTER your opponent has played their own Reno, Lone Ranger), Rheastrasza summons the Purified Dragon Nest, enabling you to Discover a discounted Dragon every turn. Not too shabby!
Reno and Friends!
Not only is Reno, Lone Ranger an absolute game-changer, this deck has a few other highly effective neutral Legendaries that can keep you in the game.
Astalor Bloodsworn has been a staple in many decks since he was released, and continues to be a powerhouse with his various effects.
Photographer Fizzle is a great card overall, and helps especially in getting you extra copies of some of your better cards, like the ones you only have a single copy of.
Special shout out to Sir Finley, Sea Guide! I've had a few games playing against decks like this one, where my opponent's deck is mostly or entirely empty, and I'm thinking I can win if I wait them out and let fatigue finish them off (depending on which deck I'm playing, obviously). Then they play Finley and basically just toss their entire hand back into their deck, sealing my fate.
